I am a fool, but I know that I am a fool, so that makes me smarter than you.

To understand the story of Ojijo demands that we start this discussion by talking about Maseno School.

Maseno School was the first educational institution for Africans in colonial Kenya, established in 1906 to train the sons of African chiefs how to read and write.

Thread 🧵 However, besides the five dynaste sons (Simon Ndinya, Onduso, Odindo, Owiti and Yonah Orao), Maseno School went on to admit other boys from the (Kavirondo) region.

And they were also taught carpentry, tailoring, building, telegraphy and clerical work.

The 'Placemaking Network Nairobi' community is the best we can thank for enabling a reality close to this.

The last week of October is usually 'Placemaking Week'.

In 2023, the focus was on the Hilton Square, na mi nlipaint Spongebob kwa one of the electrical cabinets. Image

After reading the NAMSIP document on the 'Eastlands Urban Renewal Plan' (albeit from 2019) that sought to 'transform' the old public housing estates in Eastlands, I decided to do a morning run today to check out those areas, and it was a good 20km (as I kept the time at 1:59 😁) Image

I know very well that I won't remember to share my analysis on the project very soon, so, I've decided to share the document instead, so that you may all get a chance to read it yourselves and have an idea by then.

Picked it from a thesis I was reading on the post-liberalization of the telecoms sector after the split of the Kenya Posts & Telecommunications Corporation.

I was particularly curious on how the cost of a mobile phone in Kenya dropped by 95% in the years between 1997 - 2002. Image Chapter 2 talks about it in detail. Pretty good.

He explains how KP & TC was straining to offer telecommunication services, considering that, in 1997, the number of connected lines was 269,000.

This represented a tele-density of less than 1%.

On page 2, there's a story on Patrick Namai, who was one of the best Harambee's Stars defenders back in the early 90's (to the point that Paolo Maldini even respected him), but is now a charcoal seller in the outskirts of Eldoret. Image • Was at Kakamega High School's football team, where they won 5 national football tournaments.
• He made it to the U-21 National Football Team and even played in Italy (against Maldini) & Zambia.

I've always been angered by how slow movement is in Bus Station, so today I decided to do an aerial survey and count the number of matatus that use it. Image If my history knowledge serves me right, (Central) Bus Station was initially the terminus for Kenya Bus Service (KBS), which was the only public transport company in Nairobi back then (before Nyayo Bus and the 14-seater nissans were introduced in the mid-80s & early 90s).

The Cloverleaf Interchanges in Nairobi make an interesting subject of study.

Frame 1: Jogoo Road-Outering Road-Manyanja Road
Frame 2: Southern Bypass-Lang'ata Road
Frame 3: Southern Bypass-Mombasa Road-Likoni Road
Frame 4: Mombasa Road-Airport North Road (hapo Cabanas tu) Image

1. The Outering Road interchange misses one leaf (marked in green), which would've supplemented the vehicles moving from Outering Road -> Jogoo Road.

Lack of that means they bump into vehicles moving from Jogoo Road -> Manyanja Road. Both roads have a high volume of vehicles, Image

During World War 2, the British built a driving course in Gilgil to train lorry drivers who would serve in the army.

But once the war ended, Eric Cecil, or "Bwana Safari", as Jomo Kenyatta nicknamed him, was invited to re-design the circuit to make it suitable for motor racing.

The Gilgil race track was finally opened on March 26 1951 and became known as " LangaLanga', which is Maasai for 'going round and round'.

However, due to the Mau Mau insurrection and a fatal 'Le Mans-like' accident in 1952, it was closed down in the following year.

Idealism - The Philosophy that nothing in the Universe is real, and that everything exists in the mind. It was started by 19th century philosophers like George Berkeley, David Hume and John Locke, but has it's roots in the first modern philosopher Rene Descartes.
#anganathreads In 1640, Descartes wrote his book, Meditations on First Philosophy, whereby he said that after conducting countless mathematical calculations, he found out that the foundations of knowledge weren't solid, so if there is any reason to doubt sth, it should be discarded as false.
