Busy day today, but making time for this nonsense @nytimes skills gap piece because it's important to understand what's actually going on here. For the life of me, I don't understand how you dedicate that many words to describe what's happening in the labor market right now without mentioning power (or even labor supply generally), even in passing, even accidentally.

Today marks Day 3 of #PrisonStrike2018. I wrote about ending low-wage prison labor and investing in incarcerated people forbes.com/sites/angelaha… First, the facts: about half of the 1.5 million people who are currently incarcerated work. Most work in "correctional industries," which are state-owned enterprises, and are compensated 86 cents per hour, on average. The federal minimum wage is $7.25 (which itself is very low)

The U.N. Special Rapporteur has a new report out on extreme poverty and human rights in the United States that is absolute *FIRE* and you should read it undocs.org/A/HRC/38/33/AD…. Some highlights: “But [the US’] immense wealth and expertise stand in shocking contrast with the conditions in which vast numbers of its citizens live. About 40 million live in poverty, 18.5 million in extreme poverty, and 5.3 million live in Third World conditions of absolute poverty”
