𝘛𝘪𝘬𝘬𝘶𝘯 𝘰𝘭𝘢𝘮 is a Jewish concept that translates to “repairing the world” in Hebrew. The term dates back to early rabbinic literature and also has roots in Jewish mysticism.
The term first appeared in the Mishnah in the phrase 𝘮𝘪𝘱'𝘯𝘦𝘪 𝘵𝘪𝘬𝘬𝘶𝘯 𝘩𝘢-𝘰𝘭𝘢𝘮 (“for the sake of repairing the world”), in reference to legal rulings rendered by rabbis “for the betterment of the world,” per 𝘚𝘦𝘧𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘢.

French chemist and microbiologist Louis Pasteur (1822–1895) is known for popularizing germ theory in the 19th century. However, many are unaware that he credited his greatest “discoveries” to an alleged chance reading of the Talmud, the book of Jewish religious law and theology.
Rabbi Dr. Israel Michel Rabinowitz (1818-1893), a Russo-French translator and author living in Paris at the time, is credited with showing Pasteur his translation of the Talmudic Order 𝘔𝘰’𝘦𝘥, which is about Jewish festivals. Rabinowitz descended from a long line of rabbis.

In the 1970s, scientists began patenting methods on their inventions involving recombinant DNA, which are DNA molecules formed by combining genetic material from different sources. These create sequences that would not be naturally found in the genome.
