My own experience with bonfires isn't a good one for personal reasons, but I can still recognise there is good work being done across many bonfire sites to ensure they are as safe and respectful as possible. Tonight the Alliance Party brought a motion to committee on the "Vital Role of Trees", admirable of course but there are more than a few flaws... 1/9 🧡 β€œThis Council recognises the vital role of trees in enhancing the health and well- being of people and communities, addressing climate change, and supporting biodiversity; commits to raising awareness among residents about these benefits and to actively support efforts to plant and protect the right trees in the right places and for the right reasons, ensuring that everyone can share in the benefits trees provide; and, will commit to exploring how we can educate and raise awareness of trees, the role they play in all our lives across Belfast.” Belfast City Council has already adopted the Belfast Tree Strategy & the Belfast Tree Establishment Strategy (<2023). Both are incredibly important pieces of research & adopted policy, which clearly outlines our commitment to delivering nature recovery in an urban environment 2/9 Tree Establishment strategy. Including tree planting opportunity mapping in soft and hard landscapes.
