(thread) •consider this a health care policy PSA/rant for #meded and anyone else on costs, the role of the various payers (private insurers, public programs, and the exchanges) and how they interact. Especially to help understand hospital finance:
If a patient arrives at a hospital w/ emergency services, they have to be treated regardless of their ability to pay (Section 1867 of the Social Security Act). This is a GOOD thing for patients.

But that’s an insufficient promise. when you decided you were going to do this whole ‘doctor’ thing you did it to do some good—to be better than good
2/ your MD allows you to bear witness to the times of deepest joy and sorrow of humanity. Don’t dismiss those moments as incidental to ‘a job’—that tugging on your own heart you feel is part of what makes you a great physician. #adviceForNewDoctors
