Early afternoon Floaty Boaty report: the Oasis of the Seas is back this cruise season. 4th largest cruise ship in the world (5600 person capacity), largest to ever visit Halifax. ImageImage The fact that a ship this top-heavy (top-tall?) can float is a marvel. Top deck looks fun! ImageImageImage

New fire on Farmers Dairy Ln. Some people have been evacuated; Hammonds Plains Rd now closed at either Gary Martin Dr. or Bluewater Rd. (I've seen reports of both). People on Farmers Dairy and Giles Dr. have been evacuated. If you live near this area, PACK YOUR BAGS NOW. Image There is not a new evacuation order in place (other than those places already evacuated by HRP) but previous evacuations have shown how important it is to be prepared. Prepare NOW. Gather your important documents, clothes, medications, pets, electronics, valuables, irreplaceables

This is interesting to me. Tweeted the moment the live stream started, not before, and nothing about this was mentioned on official HRM or NS Twitter accounts. How on earth are people supposed to know about events they can use to gather information, if it’s not getting out?! Just yesterday there was the call for better dissemination of information by reporters and the public. Why was this a livestream only mentioned at the time it started? Why was this not retweeted by @hfxgov if they’ve got their communications team informing the public of the fire?

Link for the livestream update on the Tantallon fires: globalnews.ca/news/9729502/h… I will say, nearly all of my information has come from @HRMFireNews and other local reporters. The updates coming out of official government channels has been abysmal, and at times incorrect (like the evacuation map). This needs to seriously change.

On the HFX gov website there is now an official evacuation map. Here is the evac area for the Tantallon fire. No emergency alerts overnight, so I obviously missed that huge chunk on the other side of the 101/Sackville Dr. Other than that I did pretty well last night! Image And here is the current map from NASA of the fire itself. The redder the square, the more recently detected the fire, so yellow squares would be where the fire was detected. The good news: it’s not spreading. It’s not out, I wouldn’t even say it’s contained yet, but no spread Image
