THREAD: I’ve been thinking a lot this week about the Britney Griner exchange and trying to understand why some have questioned her release and have been disappointed in the swap. It’s interesting to see the uproar implying it was not a “fair” trade… that some how WE lost because we gave up a ruthless arms dealer in exchange for a black American female athlete. Moments like these can reflect what we value in our society. Russia wanted to release a ruthless killer. We wanted someone who made a mistake, either intentionally or accidentally. In other words,

THREAD/ One of the reasons why it’s important to see transcripts of the Breonna Taylor Grand Jury presentation is to see whether (and how) the Attorney General presented all of the evidence and facts? Here are some of outstanding questions I still have about this case: 1) Did the grand jury hear the 9-1-1 call that shows Kenneth Walker didn’t know police were at his door? Why would he call the police if he genuinely believed it was the police trying to enter the home?

THREAD/ In a country with already unconscionable levels of food waste and which is seeing a spike in food insecurity among people and skyrocketing demands from food banks...this is a travesty and should be addressed immediately. Transporting the produce is nytimes.com/2020/04/11/bus… A logistical challenge. But why can’t governors use national guard logistics and supply chain managers to find a solution.

THREAD/ If you’ve ever walked into a news room on a Monday morning you would know how rare it is to see one as empty as this. This is the @MSNBC newsroom. Not a soul to be seen. There were no phones ringing today no loud conversations, no colleagues laughing it up across the rows Image or cranked up TV sets blasting out the competition’s broadcast. This was a Monday morning newsroom in the era of a pandemic. It felt different. And yet its spirit was the same as it ever was. Invisible to the viewers who watch at home, it’s the dedicated people who fill these

THREAD/ Imagine if I told you that years before a global pandemic broke out that would claim thousands (possibly tens of thousands) of lives, destroyed the livelihoods of millions, cratered the global economy, halted global travel and commerce and fueled xenophobia, a team of scientists identified the possible risks associated with the emergence of a respiratory virus found in specific bats in China that could be transmitted to humans. Imagine these scientists published their findings and warned of the disruption it would cause to the global economy.

THREAD/ For weeks, Pres Trump has downplayed the risks Coronavirus posed to Americans. He either deflected or said it was under control.

If journalists are to hold elected officials accountable for their words and actions, we will need to have a memory span longer then a flash Here is Pres Trump in his own words (and tweets) as compiled by the @NBCNews White House Unit.

Read them, save them and don’t forget them so when he says “I’ve always known this is a real pandemic long before it was called a pandemic” you can actually call him out on it

Per @NYGovCuomo the peak of the Coronavirus patient curve is expected to hit in about 45 days. At that point, there will be 55,000-110,000 patients in need of hospital beds & 18,600-37,200 in need of ICU beds...

The frightening part:

NY only has 53,000 beds & 3,000 ICU beds This government can’t meet this challenge without the resources of the federal government. I put my hand out in partnership. I need your help. I want your help. - @NYGovCuomo

THREAD: If your only metric is death, you are missing the point of why people are so emotional. It’s precisely because of the data you provide that emotions are so high. In all of the other causes of death you cited there are concerted societal efforts to minimize those deaths 1/ people get the flu shot, malpractice is vigorously prosecuted, we wear seatbelts and car manufacturers make safer cars, we offer resources to help suicidal individuals 2/
