Did this thing. Sorry about pic which seems to include mustard socks.
thetimes.co.uk/article/03f8a3… As ever it’s very reduced versions of more nuanced things I said. But quite like this bit. Image

That speech contained the words "to take advantage of the opportunities of Brexit." That's the key. The first actual real attempt to make the UK Singapore-on-Thames spectacularly failed. The entire shitty shit show needs to be seen in that light. This came up on the Today programme this morning but quickly dismissed because "the country voted for it and we don't want to talk about that again." But thats like discussing why someone has lung cancer and saying "Lets not talk about the fact that they were a long-term smoker."

Accountability is fine. What isn't fine is the idea that the main mechanism of accountability should be Twitter. Because to do so ignores the performative-ness, the tribalism, the madness of crowds, the control of the space by Big Tech with their own interests, the lack of nuance - a 1000 things. Social media can generate social justice, obviously. And it can also generate pure bullying.

Emmanuel Macron’s insight that Elizabeth II represented “a sense of eternity” is the best explanation I’ve so far read as to why she inspired this level of veneration. Humans do, after all, always crave that sense, endlessly inventing myths to satisfy it. See: religion.

I have no idea if Jennifer has any awareness or not of how conspiracy theories like The Great Reset/Replacement always leads to the same place, but the people following her seem to. It's instructive that both these theories have "The Great" attached to them. Because the most important thing a conspiracy theory needs to do is confer, on the person who believes in it, a sense of significance.

At my dad’s house to sort stuff out. Very weird to see his chair without him in it. That’s life: and indeed, death. It’s a strange process, this sorting. You find a lot of memories.

Thank you Klaus. Meanwhile: Wiley joins here a tradition of antisemites - Roald Dahl, Jenny Tonge - in thinking this a key question that - aha! - unmasks Jewish responsibility for the Holocaust, but sadly for him the answer is: because he was a psychotic murderous racist.

Rewatching Peep Show. It’s unbelievably funny, in a brilliantly honest about how shallow flawed cruel cynical and self-serving humans can be way, that I’m not sure we’re allowed to publicly admit about ourselves any more. Although there is Succession. Which is of course brilliant. But it seems more allowed - that dark vision of humanity - in drama.

So @Ivorbaddiel and I got the doom call from a doctor yesterday and rushed to hospital to be with my dad. We stayed for a number of hours, after which it seemed as if the old bugger may be about to swerve death one more time. My father is nothing if not tough as old boots. Amazing work as ever by the amazing @LNWH_NHS

Here's @SarahKSilverman very very good on the Jews Don't Count casting issue instagram.com/tv/CUlYF1CFDIp… I talk in the book about how the *way* Jews are played - often written as such by Jews - is part of the issue. But Sarah's noticed something else, that the characterisation of the good Jew, the hero Jew, often seems to require the casting of someone who looks very un-Jewish.

There's an interesting bit in the Cummings interview where he says, of Brexit, "A lot of the Tory MPs on my side of the argument turned out to be morons" but sadly Laura Keunssberg doesn't say to him "And...you've never been tempted to do the maths on that?" I saw a comparison with the Prince Andrew interview but it's not - DC is very self-aware: except he's unable to see that there's a world beyond politics, beyond winning and losing - that his victories have effects on actual lives.

Mare of Eastwood watched. One or two plot contrivances as with every whodunnit - I shall of course not be discussing these - but the realism and acting and sense of place were great. One tiny thing I will say is everyone’s door appears to be forever unlocked. In a town where there’s been murders and kidnappings and all sorts.

I see @amazon have mixed up the phrase "shipping delays" with the words "a complete lack of moral sense and historical perspective" here. Or to put it another way: "We are experiencing Jews not counting in your area."

In a *very* crowded field, the Like Police are possibly the worst thing on here. Back in the golden days when he was on here, I liked the odd Trump tweet. Because they were hilarious, and I wanted to use them as material for comedy. But obviously, context is irrelevant, so I'll hand myself in soon and apologise publicly for my unmitigated MAGA madness.

Just a reminder, as I listen on @BBCr4today to Ralph Fiennes talk about his production of Four Quartets - which I think should definitely *not* be cancelled - that TS Eliot wrote these lines, and it needs to be added into the conversation around our veneration of Eliot. Image One thing that really needs to be added is that Eliot wrote most of his greatest work between the wars, when the intellectual fashionability of anti-Semitism badly exacerbated the European neglect of concern for the growing plight of German Jews.

The reflex assumption by the left that Starmer is motivated by factional war and not, maybe, real sympathy with Jewish concern is unsurprising but still dispiriting. The anxieties of the actual people, the actual minority, at the heart of this, seem to be irrelevant. It's fine to oppose the decision to withdraw the whip from Corbyn. But insodoing, it's still worth remembering that the victims in this ongoing hateful morass - and as yet, the failed attempts to sort it out - are not the Labour Left. It's Jews.

Following Spotify's recommendations, in my experience, leads nowhere. Never found a new Neil Young/Joni Mitchell/David Bowie that way. Then, this morning, I clicked on Vic Chestnutt, thinking well, obviously not. I was wrong. Have not stopped listening to him all day. Chesnutt. Not Chestnutt.

I wore blackface in TV sketches 25 years ago. I have apologised. I will apologise now again: it was wrong. It was racist. I am sorry. Now. If Kerry would like to show me where I've said standing with Palestine is racist, and shown dedication to Apartheid, that would be great. Here btw, was my most recent apology in The Daily Telegraph, at the start of May.
