The book begins from the premise that because nuclear weapons work by not being used - by deterring enemies from doing things they would otherwise do - convincing people deterrence works is always a work of imagination & storytelling.

First, we take stock of the wealth of increasingly sophisticated scholarship documenting the dubious data, perverse side effects, and de-politicising consequences of rankings.
