I dunno man sometimes this place is hell but a while ago people were talking about their dream jobs and someone on here said “I do not dream of labor” and it made me sit down and think about things for like… months straight. Whoever you are tweet person, you fucked with my brain. Way to get in there.

The difficult thing about making your job your sole passion is you’re always compromising on it. You’re always adjusting based on the needs of not just a team of others (the pretty way it likes to be dressed up) but the needs of a company/corporation/publisher. projects I worked on were my passion. I cared so much for them, I poured almost all of me in. but along the way, in order to meet the goals of the team and the company, things had to give. I had to compromise on my own creative needs to fit the project needs

gamers who tweet at developers are in general a lot, but honestly i don't know how WoW devs have public twitters. players get mad if the devs don't listen to their feedback. they are also mad for some reason I cannot fully parse... if devs do listen to feedback? they're just mad. like imagine screaming for months for a company to listen to you and then when they do listen to you, you scream "wow they're literally just doing what people want now to save their asses" like... feedback doesn't get enacted overnight you absolute babies.

I wanted to put together a little starter kit for anyone out there who also wants to try gouache. For colors: these are my mains. you need a cool and warm version of red, yellow and blue, a black and a white. I also add naples yellow, burnt sienna and yellow ochre. Any brand. My gouache paints For brushes, you really just need a couple to start, a smallish square one, a big square one and a round one. That blue one on the end is my favorite, it’s the student brand of Winsor & Newton called cotman so don’t think you need to spend a ton of money. My brushes

happy new year from Gordon who rolled in a very dead thing this morning, came into my studio, rubbed his face all over the rug to try to get the stink off and now is sitting outside with me while we wait for John to go buy some shampoo to wash him Image update! not a dead animal! a very alive skunk!

If the game was called “middle aged men create the game they dreamed about when they were 12” would it make more sense to you? It’s not a reflection of the genre it was named for. half the people who run this industry are obsessed with the 80s, tits and dick jokes It’s a stark and almost jarring reflection of who is still in charge of this industry.

This is a really interesting read on what a writer who is actively hiring concept artists is looking for.
I will say it’s important to note that requirements for concept vary based on who is doing the hiring but there’s really good insight in here. The biggest thing missing in here is that some bigger studios have more granularity with concept, so some people are doing character, some are doing environment and people specialize. Polished art with character added for scale are sometimes environment concepts for lighting etc

Re: horses in games and films: Here’s a closer approximation of what a standard Viking horse probably looked like. Short, stocky and very sturdy. Icelandics were brought to Iceland during the Viking age by Norse settlers. A group of Icelandic horses Other breeds resembling what was in that ancient mix: Shetland and Connemara. Both short little bubs. Of course they’ve been bred to something quite different today than what was back then, but these are closer than a quarter horse! Shetland ponyConnemara

Oh it’s world mental health day? Alright. I was going to wait to do this but maybe it’s a good day for it. Last night some of you saw me melt down about what twitter has done to my mental health after I was dogpiled for an art opinion in July. I’m gonna talk about it now. First off, here’s what I said. It’s been important that I kept these screenshots. I look at them often as a touchstone because the gaslighting has been overwhelming. People read the first one and took it extremely personally in so many varied wrong ways. Long tweet thread about how sometimes if you’re not gettinContinuation of that thread

After reading this excerpt from Chasing Aphrodite, the true story of how the Getty and other museums traded in stolen antiquities, I will never again judge video game pick ups for being too on the nose. Just out of curiosity, where did the “forced to look at videos of human mutilation” line come from? Cause it’s not in the same article a lot of this other stuff is from so just wondering what the source is on that. For the record, I concepted quite a bit of brutality against humans. I looked at ref. And at every assignment my leads checked with me. Are you sure you’re okay to look at this? Do you want us to put someone else on this? Let us know if this gets too heavy. Every single time.

It’s 4:30 am and I’m wide awake mad at a bad art/design take I read on here so fuck it. If you’re still stressed about the fact that you’re not producing art right now, a good teacher told me once to think of art making like wringing out a sponge When you’re resting and doing other things (like cultivating your sourdough starter, or laying very still staring at the ceiling for hours)
you’re in an absorbing state. Soaking up inspiration in little drops like water.

The back legs of horses can be tough to draw. I made these simplified notes based on common mistakes I’ve seen and made myself.

Note: I’m calling the before drawings “incorrect” in an anatomical sense. If you draw them that way and like it, do you. I did some slightly more detailed notes for drawing a horse’s front legs

the basic color wheel used to confuse me because i tend to like really desaturated colors. if you're like me you can try taking the color wheel into photoshop and desaturating it then lightening and darkening it to find your base colors. i then mess with making one color more saturated than the others if i want saturation to be my contrast. (the browns and reds in the sirens pieces are higher saturation than the blues)
