Okay, since I feel like talking about Númenor this morning, here's a long thread; no pictures or text links this time, this is just pure ranting vibes, a brainstorming session if you will, for how the mysterious S2 plot for Númenor can play out; We start with Tar-Palantir:

/1
Tar-Palantír: It's important to understand, that in Númenor, there has been no time contraction. @tropbrainstorm posted a thread showing that 3000 years has passed in Númenor since the end of the First Age, not 1000 years as is stated else in Middle-Earth in the show.

For those who think the showrunners are not allowed anything beyond the appendices, or are not digging deep into the text, let me introduce the concept of "Ósanwe-kenta", or "Enquiry into the Communication of Thought". I'll link the full essay later, but let's begin:

/1 Image Hall of Lore has a great thread that covers the concept in detail from the text. But for our purposes we'll simplify it to apply it to what we are seeing in The Rings of Power. The most basic concepts first are that all minds are equal and open.

TROP S2 Theory #1.2: The Parable of the Faithful Son.
Again: mild spoilers so proceed with caution.

We've established Elendil's Job-like story arc continuing from S1. But how does it end in S2? He can't just suffer endlessly for no reason, where does it take him, and why?

/1
Lloyd Owen as Elendil in The Rings of Power; a scene from the teaser trailer, it depicts elendil in an unruly crowd, attempting to reach for someone or something as he is pushed back by royal guards into the crowd. he looks pained and is possibly yelling or shouting. Elendil is wearing his white scaled Sea Captain armor, and has a blue cloak. In an interview with Black Girl Nerds, Lloyd Owen talks about Elendil's arc in S2. Lots of good stuff, but at around 27:00 Lloyd says, "And to take that gift with me on my horse and ride with it, super special."

What is this gift, where does he go?

TROP S2 Theory #1.1: The Task of being Faithful

The following contains mild plot spoilers from recent news articles/trailers, so avoid if you do not wish to know. I'm going to try to talk about the thematic arc of Elendil in S2, but I'll start with a recap of Elendil S1:

/1
Lloyd Owen as Elendil in Episode 7 of The Rings of Power, "The Eye". He is covered in ash and dust, the sky is red, he is holding a horse as he looks at Valandil (Alex Tarrant) who is about to try to tell him about what happened to Isildur. In a S1 interview with NOTR, Lloyd Owen mentions The Story of Job in the Bible as a source for understanding Elendil (timestamp 8:30). I thought it was interesting, as Tolkien describes Elendil as a "Noachian figure" in Letter 131. But Job also works.

The Rings of Power S1 E2: Adrift

live-threading now: Image #troprewatch
We get the title intro starting this episode (after recap), with music composed by Howard Shore. Some clear symbolism here (Nine Rings, 2 Trees, Númenor), and also some black sand snaking it's way through...
"...the rest of him slither's in"

The Rings of Power S1 E1: A Shadow of the Past

live-threading now: Image #troprewatch the first words of the show, "Nothing is evil in the beginning". a reference to Elrond's quote about Sauron from The Fellowship of the Ring text. a clear indication as any about what (and whom) this show will be about. Image

"My Dinner with Durin":

Ok friends, buckle up because this will be the longest thread I’ve made yet. A month ago I posted this tweet and asked you a question. Now it's time to dive deep into the context of this dinner scene, and see if we can unravel some hidden meanings.
/1 Let’s start with mithril; we first get a hint of it near the end of Ep.2, when Durin IV assures his father that Elrond doesn’t know about it. Durin III however, is skeptical of that. What this scene reveals is that the dwarves very recently discovered mithril in the mountain.

[OOC]🧵: There’s a lot to like about #TheRingsOfPower but I wanna talk about our favourite son, Isildur, and his S1 story. Especially because there have been some criticisms levied against our boy. (Note:spoilers if you haven’t read the books or watched the LoTR films).

/1
Image We’re introduced to Isildur in Ep 3. Here we learn a few things; he’s unsure about the direction of his life. He’s in the Sea Guard because that’s what Elendil wants for him. He’s been kicked out of the Queen’s Guard and the Horseman’s Guild. A wayward and uncertain soul.

For today's #TolkienTrewsday #TolkienTuesday I wanted to talk about the importance of the link between Telperion and The White Tree of Gondor, and why I think it's important as a symbol of Numenor, the connection between Elves and Men, and the eventual rule of Men.
Image
Image
Telperion is the older of the Two Trees of Valinor, and more loved by the Elves who lived in Aman. Its light was silver, and through a salvaged seedling became the Moon, and moonlight. The Elves loved Telperion so much that Yavanna made another tree in it's image, Galathilion.

*neighs* I am not by any means a Tolkien expert, but I thought for today's #TolkienTrewsday I would share some of my thoughts on horses, war, Numenoreans and Tolkien's experiences. #TolkienTrewsday "Númenóreans in their own land possessed horses, which they esteemed...they did not use them in war; for all their wars were overseas...they were of great stature and strength, and their fully-equipped soldiers were accustomed to bear heavy armour and weapons."
