A common tactic of people who want to control large groups is to replace reason with superstitious nonsense, then get people to fully commit to the false premise. Then you can get them to go along with basically anything with the same faith driven retard confidence. Getting people to believe in magic also changes people's expectations of reality. With a magical understanding of the world one will only accept magical explanations for things. They expect, in this example, there should be a fish-lizard that magically manifests. This kind of thinking trains them to accept overly simplistic, authority backed explanations for everything.
