Today, Yud Alef Nissan, is the 123rd birthday of the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, my personal mentor, the foremost Jewish leader of the modern era, and the person most singularly responsible for the resurgence of Judaism after the Holocaust.
A Rebbe 🧵
The Rebbe was born in Nikolaev, into one of the most illustrious rabbinical families in the world. His father, Rabbi Levi Yitzchok, was a world-renowned scholar and Kabbalist and a descendant of the Alter Rebbe, the founder of Chabad, the Maharal of Prague, and King David.

This morning, as folks in Kentucky were facing a vicious winter storm, @RepThomasMassie did not give advice or support to his constituents, as some members of Kentucky's Congressional Delegation had.
Instead, he continued his obsessive antisemitic streak, tweeting about me.🧵
While I am currently occupied by critical aid work, I think it's important to call out #HaMassie's antisemitic lies.
The antisemitic story was in July of 2021, when I, a Rabbi from Kentucky who serves in his district, asked for a meeting about criminal justice with a 2nd Rabbi.

Rosh Hashanah at Chabad was incredible! The Shul was packed, spirits high & the food delicious.
Sadly, the holiday was marred by an issue Friday night.
While some Jewish children, including my own, played on the synagogue front porch, 3 college age men began screaming at them.
The grown men yelled jeers against Israel and Jews to the group of children, ages 4-8, the oldest of who impressively yelled back, "We Love Israel" & "Am Yisroel Chai".
My younger daughters were terrified and asked for a parent to stay on their bedroom in case the men returned.

With the news that @UKCoachCalipari is moving to Arkansas, I have to share a story.
In 2018, I had a weekly appointment just nearby a coffee place.
I would begin my day grabbing a coffee before my appointment, coincidentally at the same time Coach Cal would grab his. 🧵 1/
We would greet each other every week, sharing a word or two about campus, sports, or other light conversations.
That all changed in the days after the Pittsburgh Massacre.
@UKCoachCalipari grew up in Pittsburgh, in Squirrel Hill, near Tree of Life. He knew that community. 2/

Earlier this week, provocateur Shmuly Boteach attacked the student group Chabad at Harvard & their Rabbi, Hershey Zarchi, for hosting President Claudia Gay for a Menorah lighting on campus.
While wild attacks are his norm, it was a shockingly hypocritical turn for Boteach. 🧵 1/
President Gay had come under calls for resignation for comments in the US House late last month, discussing campus antisemitism.
Despite Boteachs baseless claims of providing cover for the embattled president, Rabbi Zarchi powerfully addressed those concerns at the Ceremony. /2

My heart is shredded as I read reports of the vicious massacre that took place in the land of Israel.
The torture, rape and slaughter of infants, men, women, and children, just for being Jews, causes unimaginable pain.
The is pure, unadulterated evil, right before our eyes.
The last 3 days have been the bloodiest in Jewish history since the Nazis were defeated.
Over 1000 Jews have been brutally slain.
Now, these vile monsters who share the Nazis dream seek to annihilate the Jewish people living in the land of Israel, from the river to the sea.

Today, the 8th of October, is the 80th anniversary on the secular calendar of the most important & most effective Jewish protest in American history, commonly called the Rabbis March.
Sadly, much of the history of the remarkable event is ignored, so please read this short 🧵.
80 years ago today, as their communities prepared for the Day of Awe, over 400 Orthodox Rabbis traveled to Washington, as Esther had, to plead for their people.
In 1943, as the world watched unmoved by the crimes of Nazi Germany & her allies, these leaders couldn't remain quiet.

Over the past week, the Chabad at UK Jewish Student Center received a series of messages threatening our Jewish community at the @universityofky.
The messages were reported to @lexkypolice, who acted quickly to address the situation, arresting the culprit Sunday evening. 🧵 1/
Several points are important to note.
1. While the @universityofky has again been silent in the face of antisemitism, the @lexkypolice have taken the issue extremely seriously. Our community is incredibly grateful for the quick response, and our students & community are safe. 2/

Today is the 12th of Tammuz, when Jewish world celebrates two momentous birthdays.
Both these birthdays, one of an individual and one of a global movement, are intertwined.
The first is the birthday of Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak Schneersohn, the previous Lubavitcher Rebbe. /1 🧵
Rabbi Schneersohn, born in Czarist Russia, & from childhood was a tireless defender of the Jewish people, with great self-sacrifice. He risked his life repeatedly under the leadership of his father the Rebbe Rashab, to defend Russian Jewry from the Czar's decrees & oppression. 2/

Tonight, the 28th of Sivan is a remarkable day that changed the face of Judaism, in America & around the world.
82 years ago today, a ship arrived in New York Harbor. On board was Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, the future Lubavitcher Rebbe & his wife Rebbetzin Chaya Mushka.🧵
The Rebbe and Rebbetzin had survived the horrors of Communism in the USSR, the rise of Nazi Germany, life in Poland and Vichy France, and had miraculously made it to America.
The Rebbe immediately began his work.

Two years ago this weekend, I stood outside our courthouse, together with other leaders, to decry the spike in antisemitic violence across the United States.
Religious groups & @HumanRightsKY joined in the gathering. (As insisted to mention, @JFedofBluegrass wasn't a sponsor) 1/ @RepAndyBarr our Congressman, joined our community, as he consistently has on this issue, and pledged his support.
He spoke about the importance of America facing this critical problem, and promised to continue be a voice to create change, as his had throughout his career. 2/

I read this over Shabbos.
This book has been on my list for a while, but I certainly didn't want to spend money on it.
I'm indebted to my dear friend Mrs. Smith, who gifted me this book from her late husband's library.
Leaving the introduction out, which quotes debunked loons, this book was fascinating.

A college student celebrating his graduation from @universityofky just yelled Kill the Kikes at me from my neighbors porch.
Headed over now.
I went over to the neighbors, (who are all good kids I love and respect) and knocked on the door.
They came out and couldn't be more embarrassed or apologetic.
I explained I knew them & I knew this didn't represent them in any way.
At our 1st ride they demanded I remove my hat & Yarmulka. (there were other hats on the ride) "it's not a normal hat".
I insisted & wore the hat on the ride.
After the ride someone stole my hat but not wallet.
Now at guest services.
My Wallet, Shades, Keys, Airpods, and Phone were left alone.
Just my Black Hat, which @SeaWorld employees were making snide comments about earlier, was taken.
I immediately stopped an employee and asked for help and he refused to call security or guest services. Now at front.

I turned on my phone after Pesach to learn that the Central synagogue of Chabad of Kentucky, my and so many others spiritual center, was destroyed in a devastating fire over Yom Tov.
Thankfully no one was hurt & the Torah was saved, but the shul is gone.

My parents dedicate their lives to the Jewish community of Kentucky. Over Pesach, over 250 people celebrated the Mitzvos of Seder & Matzah because of their work.
Chabad is always there for everyone. Please consider being there them in this time of need.
There should be no confusion about who should and should not speak out about Antisemitism. This is not "massively complicated".
If you are a follower of an Abrahamic faith, you should speak out. Your God demands it. Your faith leaders should speak out. If they are not, ask why.
If you are a moral, decent person, you should speak out. Speak out against Antisemitism regardless if the hate is coming from someone who is republican or democrat, black or white, young or old. Your morals demand it. If your community leaders are not speaking out, ask them why.
