A woman who was forgotten in history, discovered, and who continues to be a controversial figure: Mary Seacole: 2) Mary Seacole was born Mary Jane Grant in Kingston, Jamaica in 1805, the daughter of a Scottish soldier and a Jamaican “doctress,” a practitioner of Creole healing arts.

1) For a while I’ll be highlighting female pioneers in their fields. Today a medical pioneer in medicine:

Dr Jane Cooke Wright: (November 20, 1919 – February 19, 2013) was a pioneering cancer researcher and surgeon noted for her contributions to chemotherapy. 2) Wright is credited with developing the technique of using human tissue culture rather than laboratory mice to test the effects of potential drugs on cancer cells. She also pioneered the use of the drug methotrexate to treat breast cancer and skin cancer.
