Coming from what has been one of the most disenfranchised states in the country, I personally know how critical it is that we fight voter suppression and break down barriers to the ballot box. (1/4) So I’m proud to partner with @WeAreMarchOn in their efforts to fight back against voter suppression with their Voter Protection Corps:

Good morning, good people.

I want to share something with you. (A thread) I see what this moment means. From the hood to the holler, we spoke up, cried out, and fought like never before.

We didn’t win the race, but we won something much bigger. We inspired new voices to rise up, and led on structural issues that can’t be ignored.

They see us now.

I’m not just words, I’m action.

Action is co-sponsoring bipartisan legislation to increase life saving access to insulin. (1) I’m not just words, I’m action.

Action is leading on legislation to cap monthly co-pays. (2)

I stand today, because of the trailblazers like @GeraldNeal33 and @ReggieThomasKY who helped make it possible.

Kentucky only has two Black Senators. They both are endorsing me.

I am honored to carry the torch, and I am ready to lead in Washington. (1/4) In his endorsement, Senator @GeraldNeal33 said, "...The protests and police violence have shown that KY is in need of a new Senator who understands our community and will fight for all Kentuckians... He is the right person, at the right time to defeat Mitch McConnell..." (2/4) Image

We are devastated by last night's killing of a treasured citizen in our community at the hands of law enforcement.

This must stop. We need justice. We need leadership.

My statement: bit.ly/cb-statement I'm devastated to learn that a treasured citizen in our community was killed by law enforcement last night in the Russell Neighborhood, just about a mile away from my home. (2/?)

This is BIG. Seriously.

I am humbled to be endorsed by 16 Democratic Reps from all over the state including all 3 members of House leadership and all House members of the Black Caucus.

Today is further proof that we are building the coalition to unite all KYians. (1/?) Image These endorsements show that my experiences, conviction, and years of bold leadership are exactly what leaders of Kentucky demand in a U.S. Senate.

The choice in this primary is clear.

In the KY U.S. Senate race, there is one candidate who has won elections and passed bipartisan legislation, stood for public education, walked on picket lines, fought to protect small farms and miners, marched with students and moms, and told Matt Bevin “Return to Sender”. There is one candidate who lives in the poorest zip code in KY, rationed insulin, and fought for common sense gun safety after having 4 cousins murdered. There is one who worked in every level of government and across KY fighting for equity.

There is one.

Black history is every moment of every day. It is not just a few days out of the year, some abstract point to reflect on, or a series of black and white photos. It is the past, current, and future foundation of our journey as a nation. It is the fight against racism and inequity. It is the innovations that influence culture and science. I stand in it, and so do you.

Today, the president of the United States has been impeached.

That’s an important first step. But we can’t let Mitch McConnell get away with throwing out his responsibility to hold a fair trial in the Senate. Mitch won’t step up for the people of this Commonwealth and our country. He never has. But we can show him that ripping up the oath he swore to uphold has consequences.

No one is above the law, and no one should be below it.

When laws recognize and protect the humanity of all people, those laws can ensure justice. That truth inspired me to seek public service. I saw injustice in my community, and knew it could change. A lot of Kentuckians know what it’s like to feel like our laws don’t see us. Many of us feel under the law.

Last night at our tour stop in Whitesburg, we had a group conversation. Folks talked about what made them proud to be a Kentuckian. What kind of movement they wanted to see in our Commonwealth. Afterwards, a young man came up to me and said he didn’t feel comfortable talking in front of the whole crowd. But he was so inspired by the discussions in the room that he wanted to share his thoughts with me. That’s why I’m doing this tour in the first place.

Although we didn’t have money, my parents instilled in me the value of hard work and education. They knew the system was broken, but they also knew that excelling in school would give me a fighting chance. They made it clear how critical my education was. My mom literally has an album with every single certificate I have ever received from school. Every honor roll, every dean’s list. She framed them all.

As you may have heard, the Governor is calling the Special Legislative Session this Friday to address the pension crisis facing quasi-governmental entities.

Quick thread to make sure you are up to date. As you know, in the 2019 session the supermajority passed pension legislation. Bevin vetoed it. I joined others in pushing for a full, open discussion on this issue, to pass the rate freeze that agencies need, and build a plan to address liabilities and long term sustainability.

The hate we are witnessing from the Governor, this President, and certainly the one who refers to himself as the Grim Reaper, is deeply destructive and counter to our highest ideals as a nation. Vulnerable families and law enforcement are being treated like political footballs, dog whistles are being replaced with bullhorns. This should gravely concern all of us.

Mitch McConnell was elected to Senate the year I was born. Growing up, I remember learning that he had no interest in coming to my community in west Louisville. We were not important to him. As a father now, I have to look at my brilliant daughters and know that their Senator could care less about them. Our pain, our trauma, our potential, are irrelevant to him. This is clear.

Trump wants to be impeached. Drama is his playground. Impeaching him will allow him to lie, claim the victim, and manipulate his base. There is a real scenario where he wins re-election based on that, and uses lies and corruption to attack House seats.

However... Donald Trump must be impeached. Beyond politics, but as a declaration of rule of law, checks and balances, and justice. If our laws are to mean anything, now is a defining moment to prove it.

Kentucky, let’s renew our strength and keep fighting the good fight. Corruption, poverty, alarming health challenges, environmental injustice, regressive taxes, severe disenfranchisement...they don’t have the be the legacy we leave our children. We know system level change is needed. We know Kentucky ultimately needs an @atticascott4ky to be Governor. We know we need a government that is actually accountable to and led by the people. We know we need to get big money out of the driving seat. We know we need justice.

Teachers, Bevin tried to blame you speaking up for our future as the reason a child was shot. As terrible as that is, it shows me that in his deranged way, he recognizes something. He may slander you, but it’s because he realizes how critical you are. He wants to blame you for lives being lost, because he knows deep down that your work actually saves lives. He demeans you, because he knows he can’t beat you.
