A major problems w/ many evangelicals entrance into race conversations is that it is nearly impossible to understand how racism works, and thus how to participate in freedom, w/o first setting aside the individualism inherent in how they see the gospel & justice. Namely, because centering of an individualistic salvation spread from person to person is the center, rather than the centering of saving communities and households, evangelicals often see individual justice and salvation as the path to right wrong.

There are few more wildly misinterpreted, gratuitously used & irresponsibly manipulated text than the creation poems.

Its from our syncretism of our oppressive culture with the text that we justify all sorts of identity based oppression and neglect the creation itself. This provides the context for homophobic “jokes” that use a static interpretation of an ever changing and progressing creation to say “it was Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve.”

Yes! Lets do a quick thread on this.

For clarity: I am primarily (ideologically) a critical race theorist and so as I define terms, I am doing so, as we all do for all work, from a particular (though in this case widely held) academic lens... To effectively define "racism," we must also define "prejudice" and "discrimination." We could add bigotry in here too, but for the sake of my own time, I'll stick with these 3.
