@below_level @brodiefenlon @cbcradio @CBCdsouza The short answer - Ontario's Premier Ford visited his friend Gov Abbott in Texas in Jan. He uses the GOP playbook, lie, create chaos, reward your friends, blame someone else. Ontario got the numbers way down in the summer. For the 1st phase Prime Minister Trudeau ran the show
@below_level @brodiefenlon @cbcradio @CBCdsouza The provinces are in charge of health, education, etc. When Ford retook control in the fall the schools were open for in-person learning, Toronto had a few new cases every day. Then the 2nd wave started. Canadian Thanksgiving is in Oct.
@below_level @brodiefenlon @cbcradio @CBCdsouza Ford didn't listen to the scientists. He was so sure that the pandemic was over for Ontario that he didn't order testing supplies. By mid-October the 2nd wave started. He refused requests from the cities that were seeing outbreaks to let them reintroduce some restrictions.

@TheLeadCNN @piya @paulanewtonCNN You've conflated 2 stories. There is less vaccine supply. Like the rest of the world, countries must compete with the US. It's not just about supply. In Canada right now the provinces are either doing very well or it's a disaster.
@TheLeadCNN @piya @paulanewtonCNN I'm a dual citizen. My family is in Fla and Texas so I know how bad it can get. Ontario and Alberta are led by right-wing populist Premiers who don't like the measures. Ontario's Premier Ford is incompetent. He has created a chaotic vaccine rollout.
@TheLeadCNN @piya @paulanewtonCNN There are supplies of the vaccine sitting on shelves. The province's online registration system was delayed from Dec to mid-March. That left 34 public health units having to come up with their own registration system, Vaccinations started in Jan.

@jaketapper The first page of the Georgia law is full of signs that they are acting in bad faith. They frequently refer to the need to address the loss of voter confidence n the 2020 election and to make the laws "uniform".
@jaketapper If their goal is really about voter confidence Kemp would reopen the legislature, hold hearings and amend the law. The statements by corporations and the strong concerns of voters make it clear the law doesn't have the confidence of Georgia voters.
@jaketapper Can't wait to see them squirm in court when they try to justify some very undemocratic changes by claiming they are restoring confidence in the election system in Georgia.

Democracy 101 Making it harder to vote isn't an issue of culture, it's based on a lie that led to a violent insurrection. It's about HR 1 and HR 4. If Florida passed a law that let everyone vote but TV pundits would you think it's ok because it's not bad?
Why do you get to decide for the people who see new barriers to voting that they are stupid to call for a boycott because they may lose money?
Laws rarely discriminate overtly. If this was a good bill the Governor could end this by opening it up for one month of public hearings and a new vote. They raced it through, always a sign that there's mischief.

@MaddowBlog The media and Dems have 3 choices in their response to the Parliamentarians' ruling on the minimum wage increase.
1. Declare defeat before the battle starts. That is how the media are covering it.
2. Treat it as a call to arms to pressure the Senate to end the filibuster. Thi s is in an inside Washington story that shows the GOP they can exert power even in the minority. Getting public support for ending the filibuster right now is how losers respond.
3 Keep it in the bill or introduce a separate bill while we spread out across the country to energize the majority who support the change to fight hard, pressure every member of Cong to support the law.

@FPWellman When will the CEOs that have been paying to play at Trump's properties realize that Trump will be investigated and the investigation will include deep dives at his clubs. That's where he made phone calls, met with people behind the walls, and possibly accepted foreign money.
@FPWellman They will be asked if they talked to Trump or knew about his plans. The RNC will also be asked about using lies and incitement to violence as fundraising. The longer Trump resists, the more likely they get swept in.
@FPWellman They might want to start thinking like the political class who are trying to separate themselves. A phone call to the RNC, a few CEOs, and Bill Barr could have Trump out of the office today. The message is easy - to the RNC, get him out or we rethink our strategy.

Questions about consequences and accountability

1. What do we want to accomplish with it?
- prevention of future occurances?
- punishment?
-,public shame?
- suffering?
- clear the path for unity?
2. Who are we talking about?
- Trump
- GOP members of Cong
- Trump staff, cabinet?
- media?
To achieve rhe goals we have to analyze the options to see if they will achieve the goals. The analysis also has to consider possible negative consequences that may make it harder to achieve all of the goals ?

@NormOrnstein Don't discount the grip the extremists have on the Senate and House. McConnell is the only leader who can't control his caucus. Every time one of the Rs criticized the plan to object more Senators joined Hawley.
@NormOrnstein You have the president pro tem of the Pa Senate doing what Trump is asking Pence to do. He refused to swear in or even call the name of a Democratic Senator even though his win was certified. The police escorted the Dem Lt. Gov out of the chamber.
@NormOrnstein The courts will deal with it, but this is the GOP. Voter suppression is priority 1. Raffensberger is already talking about ending no-excuse vote by mail. He launched an investigation into the New Georgia Project.

@BradMossEsq Every pundit talking about the Senate starts with the automatic statement that the GOP will block Biden. Right now McConnell is the weakest leader in Congress. He was unable to stop the kamikaze mission by 12 Senators
@BradMossEsq The GOP are in the grip of the extremists. The new Colorado member of the House announced she is going to carry her Glock around Washington even though it's illegal. Trump used the extremists to primary the candidates he didn't like. .
@BradMossEsq They are going to disrupt. They don't care about the rules or leadership. The Pa. President pro tem of the Senate refused to seat a Democrat whose win was certified He wouldn't even call his name. This is what Trump wants Pence to do.

@emily_fri @chrissyfarr Finally. America is so intent on pretending we're close to turning back the clock that the country isn't preparing for the future. I spent many years working on disability and health law and policy. As a dual citizen, living in Canada I know how bad things are about to get.
@emily_fri @chrissyfarr All if my family live in the US, 4 working as health professionals. Living this pandemic in 2 countries is a challenge. The to do list for Congress is long
- start now to provide support for mental health which will affect almost every American.
@emily_fri @chrissyfarr SARS 2003 left was relatively short compared to Covid-19. Most of the transmission was in the hospital, with even the lead infectious disease physician becoming ill. PTSD hit hard and lasted a long time, even with support. This time the impact will be broader and deeper.

@wendellpotter @tfgyem @JoeBiden I'm with you. I've been following this for 40 years. I happened to be finishing university in Ontario when I was diagnosed with a rare genetic condition. I was preparing to return home to the US for law school and changed my mind. I was lucky to be dual citizen. That was 1978.
@wendellpotter @tfgyem @JoeBiden I found a letter Rick Santorum sent me in 1992 (I lived in Pgh before moving). He explained why he wouldn't support then-First Lady Clinton's plan. The GOP has excelled at saying no. The Dems give them too many openings by running on slogans.
@wendellpotter @tfgyem @JoeBiden I have spent my time in Canada working on disability and health law and policy in govt, the not for profit, community, and legal settings. I had a front-row seat as it made the last transformation and developments since then.

@davidlitt @david4potus2020 @txelectionlaw Along with Rona McDaniel who took less than 24 hours to quell doubt that she was not 100% behind Trump's legal team by announcing they were going to do what the courts wouldn't do - disenfranchise voters sin Mi Ga and Pa who voted for Biden.
@davidlitt @david4potus2020 @txelectionlaw She timed to for the biggest impact on world stage.she coincided the start of the off the wall claims just as she G20 was assembling virtually to talk about the pandemic. Trump made sure the world wouldn't miss the show by speaking a few lies and skipping off to golf.
@davidlitt @david4potus2020 @txelectionlaw We should be grateful to them for finally showing that McConnell, McDaniel, the legal team and the close followers has no limit to how far they would go to sell out the Constitution and attack the election.

@KatyTurNBC @JoeNBC Listening to the discussion about the Apocalypse Scenario I had one of those AHA moments. I am perplexed by the sudden media focus on a statement Trump had made in the past. The media response reminds me of 2016. Trump does this to provoke shift. The story.
It is also being turned into a win for Donald Trump on the airwaves. I don't have the answer but I do have questions that we should all think about as we head into a period where the media will be more influential in the outcome than any past election. Briefly my ques
1. Choice of topics and the rigor of the approach is critical. If all we hear about are polls and dissect and panic over Trump's latest provocation we are in trouble. If Trump's lies are replayed over and over again for discussion, to enrage people he runs the daily msg.

The GOP know Trump believes "his" judge will out loyalty to him over loyalty to the Constitution. They agree that the judge should rule on election cases. They have tainted any decision that comes down.
It matters because yesterday the EU and US refused to accept Lysenko's election as fre and fair. If the Senate chooses it degrade the court to throw the election to Trump they may be on the receiving end of sanctions and a refusal by some countries to recognize the election.

@RadioFreeTom You are exactly right. Perhaps a series of reality check videos will help them understand that Trump is destroying not helping their business. Think about these scenarios:
@RadioFreeTom You're worried that the guidelines your employer's adopting are going to protect you. Trump says to trust him that you are going to be safe.

the day before you return you watch the news and see what's happening at the packing plants where so many people have tested positive.
@RadioFreeTom The state ordered the clan plant to close so that I could sanitize everything and we can figure this face to make it safer. They also ordered testing and PPE.

Trump steps in and says no you have to open up immediately. The state isn't allowed to enforce its own health standards.

@Burrite @joshtpm Medical supplies that were supposed to be shipped to Germany and France from Thailand were diverted by Trump using the DPA. The products were sold by 3M Trump ordered 3M them to halt all shipments of medical supplies to Canada, France and Germany.
@Burrite @joshtpm France and Germany described it as piracy.… America's image is being further destroyed. This is the story from the Vatican News agency.…
@Burrite @joshtpm 3M responded by saying they have been working with the administration but warned that diverting the masks, most of which aren't made in the US, would be a humanitarian problem and could lead to other countries refusing to export to the US.

@froomkin From afar (Canada/ dual citizen) some observations. The biggest problem is the inward focus of the media and politicians. Trump's businesses are overseas, yet the media treated his business interests as outside the realm of politics. There were excellent business reporters.
@froomkin They were ignored. They didn't challenge Trump's obvious hypocrisy. He criticizes Muslims, yet his new projects are in Muslim majority countries. He lies about finances. There is financial information about Trump held in other countries No one is going after it.
@froomkin Trump is destroying America's image, the data is there but not the reporting. It is costing the US trade and good deals - no reporting. Trump has lost cases, threatened businesses as President - not covered.
