1/ The second paragraph is false. IP routing does not require the endpoint IP address, people use proxies (Brave interposes one) and Tor.

Worse, their privacy policy is atrocious, and likely in violation of privacy laws (cc: @privacymatters for a look). consensys.net/privacy-policy/ 2/ My co-founder, @Brave CTO @brianbondy already made the point about proxies. Apple's Private Relay and other MASQUE implementations emerging now also proxy, but again: Brave drops your IP when proxying to Infura.

It gets worse, though. Find "Hotjar"...

@andreasgal Chris Jones @shaver & I started B2G. Hard to innovate inside Mozilla, so we launched as a pirate ship. New-ish CEO wasn't fully on board but couldn't stop it. He had a TED talk so I handled MWC 2012 PR with @carlosdomingo then of Telefonica. /1
groups.google.com/g/mozilla.dev.… cnet.com/tech/mobile/te… Above the fold on MWC Monday daily for three years in a row from 2012-14. Fun times going thru walls to build a Web OS w/ small teams from Mozilla, Qualcomm, TCL. Met Samsung & other bigs. Pushed Web APIs toward native parity (brendaneich.com/2012/02/mobile…). /2

I know some find the WEF a joke, or a rich creeper club, but its plans get operationalized by the likes of BlackRock. It's no joke, not to farmers such as Jeroen Van Maanen or all of us "useless eaters" downstream of him & his fellows (this isn't confined to the Netherlands).

/1 I was dimly aware of WEF until 2008 or so, when Mozilla had interactions. Mitchell went to Davos and reported to all hands meeting a Russian Oligarch there. Some folks reacted negatively but Mitchell added "it's the right term, we have ours in the US too". She was 100% right.

1/ When DuckDuckGo got caught making exceptions for Microsoft and Bing trackers [ref], one defense they offered was that it wasn’t a big deal, because DDG browsers block third-party (3p) cookies. We beg to differ. Discussion in short thread 👇.

[ref] 2/ The thing is, DDG browsers also include exceptions for how MS trackers circumvent 3p cookie blocking. Trackers try to get around cookie blocking by appending identifiers to URL query parameters, to id you across sites.

@CoachCascade @maryam_farsh Java uses + for addition and string concatenation, and JS was supposed to "look like Java".

This was not one of those things I didn't think about enough. It was a particular design decision that followed the general marching order from management, for marketing JS as Java-like. @CoachCascade @maryam_farsh Late in 1995, Bill Joy suggested using a different operator (I recall suggesting @, not used yet in Java) for string concatenation, but too late to change JS in Netscape 2. Perl favored number with + and used . for concat. Python threw an exception, requiring explicit conversion.

@daniel_bilar @kristenmag @Mememarkets1 @USMortality Worth a watch: interview with my friend @DrJBhattacharya

Some future we can sense is coming, as the panic-pr0n merchants hang in their tangled web of lies, will render a harsh, negative verdict on the denominator deniers and liars. @daniel_bilar @kristenmag @Mememarkets1 @USMortality @DrJBhattacharya 17:00 is worth watching. Hancock (a scumbag) is no doubt defining herd immunity as zero Covid, but you can see Peter (the host) struggle with seasonality. People think in static terms, hyperbolic discounting at best, they are not used to metastability. Predators prey upon this.

My kernel hacking days are decades ago. I started with sbrk(2) can return null, no more virtual mem. At SGI for some huge NASA app, we enabled the now-standard overcommit + OOMkiller model. VM scheduler should deprioritize thrashing processes too.

So why is Big Sur so awful? /1 I just had Slack (using most memory and CPU) go south trying to autocomplete after I typed @ and I could not get control back. The Apple menu was nonresponsive. I could move pointer with trackpad but Slack stuck in foreground. Fan racing.

This is an OS bug, not just a Slack bug.

1/ We made a mistake, we're correcting: Brave default autocompletes verbatim "binance.us" in address bar to add an affiliate code. We are a Binance affiliate, we refer users via the opt-in trading widget on the new tab page, but autocomplete should not add any code. 2/ Thanks to @airyorange, @j9roem, others for crucial feedback: (a) default autocomplete for a domain should not add anything; (b) redirect even if private client-side, apart from HTTPS Everywhere-type pure wins, has risk of conditioning users to be blind to bad server redirects.

Regarding practicaltypography.com/the-cowardice-…: Starting with ad-hominems and insults (always bet on JS!) does not recommend Butterick on character. But the problem is that he's flat wrong on the facts about @Brave, as users and followers of Brave already know. /1 @brave "With Brave, Mr. Eich wants to ruin my work...." No, I do not -- but ascribing intent based on false claims shows bad faith. Anyway, he's wrong: we do not layer ads over any website, and we have never. /2

Ad-tech intermediary lobbyists use Google and FB to massively overstate benefits of tracking, news at 11. Publishers waking up to this after years of being on the losing end of the Lumascape.

This chart gets "old news" reaction from smarties, or a "how can this go on" reaction from others.

But there's another angle: @acfou estimates fraud at 20%, It could be 40%. Google takes 60% of ad spend, $80B in USA last year. 0.2 x 0.6 x $80B = $9.6B; 0.4 x 0.6 x $80B = $19.2B.
