As many have said, the crackdowns threaten academic freedom and freedom of speech. But that doesn't fully capture what is happening and what's at stake.

The crackdowns are likely *discriminating* due to viewpoint—and perhaps on the basis of race, ethnicity, or religion. 1/ The Yale faculty letter captures some of this nicely. Past peaceful protests including encampments have often been permitted on that campus and others. What is different this time? In part the message, which opposes a *particular viewpoint* endorsed by many unis after 10.7 2/
