I gave up tenure to come to @newmarkjschool at CUNY because I believed the world needed an engagement journalism MA program, and because we were grant funded, there was no open associate professor line. Today I officially got tenure and promotion again 🎉 My alumni have proved me right and made me so proud. I’m not a huge tenure person per se, but given surging threats to profs…seems more important than ever before. I am not even close to as worthy as @nhannahjones, but writ large y’all can see how higher ed is threatened!

"Respectable journalists, to whom being seen as balanced, level-headed, & more attuned to context & contingency than the reactive social-media mob is more important than reporting the most accurate version of the truth as best they can tell it, backed off" theconcourse.deadspin.com/dont-doubt-wha… "They were all too happy to say that the sky was not blue if it meant burnishing their credentials as serious and objective, and fell over each other to back away from what was right in front of their eyes."

All of this may be true, but I really wish the NYT would run one column about not-elite colleges where the big issues aren't perfectionism, they are students coping w/financial stress and other issues that prevent them from focusing on school nytimes.com/2018/12/08/opi… I've been teaching at public schools for about 11 years now, and I have very few students whose biggest issue is desperate need to get As. Instead, it's balancing work and school, dealing with depression/anxiety, etc.
