It's been a challenging couple of months here - lots of late nights & early mornings. Recently I gathered some material for my course that really cheered me up, so I've decided to share.

TL;dr: The nicknames of Africa's national ⚽️ teams are the best in the world. Full stop. There are of course the Elephants with which even casual fans may be familiar: Les Éléphants of the Ivory Coast and Guinea's Syli National.

20% of this ranking is based on "Peer Reputation": USNWR surveyed college Presidents, Provosts, & Admissions Deans and asked them to score undergrad programs on scale of 1-5. Only 34% responded.

0% of the ranking is based on facilities, rsrch/tchng support, etc. The way to move up in rankings is not to actually get better, it's to find the high-weight criteria where you can improve. For UF that one such area was student-faculty ratio - remember the the "500 new teaching faculty" hiring spree? (but no "500 new offices" building spree)

The school nurse called Friday to remind us that if we don’t submit proof our kid got his DT vaccine booster by Wednesday he can’t return to school and my wife hasn’t stopped laugh-crying since. It’s estimated that there were 6500 cases of Diptheria per year WORLDWIDE between 2013-2017 wwwnc.cdc.gov/eid/article/25…, though has apparently jumped since then to ask much as 18K worldwide. cdc.gov/diphtheria/abo…

Their “experiment” wouldn’t even have made it to the school science fair: it lacks replication, there is no description of the methods, no surveys of ambient or background pathogens, no idea if samples are independent, no comparison or context… It’s really kinda sad, because if they had reached out to someone at UF they could have done an interesting project. At the very least someone would have made sure they done a few very basic things to ensure the data are actually useful.

I agreed to set up a green screen so we can make Avengers movie posters but with squirrels.

@HellbenderHecht Representation of editors from countries are besed definitely helps. So does discussing implicit biases with editors. 2x blind reviewing might help (ppl typically focus on the tole of 2xB on gender, but it could help w/ geographic bias as well.) 1/ @HellbenderHecht Finally, editors can be careful about the language they use in decision letters. Instead if of “have the MS reviewed by native English speakers” we use “fluent” or even better “...reviewed by an experienced editor of scientific writing in English”. 2/
