Social media tax is a compulsory tax imposed by the government on social media users. Introduced in African countries (Benin, Chad, Kanya, Zambia, Tanzania, Uganda) in 2018, it is seen as “punishing taxes” and have forced millions of internet users to stop using the social media. Data sellers in affected countries were also forced to cut off staffs because of the levy. The social media platforms affected are more than 60 online platforms including Facebook, WhatsApp, Linkedin, Instagram, etc.
