The New York State Senate and Assembly have so far approved six of the 10 bills in Gov. Kathy Hochul's gun reform package.

They were introduced in response to the Buffalo mass shooting.

🧵 Among those six are bills that ...

1) will eventually require new semiautomatic pistols sold to be capable of microstamping
2) ban the sale of body armor vests to civilians
3) institute new recordkeeping requirements to prevent gun, ammunition sales to prohibited purchasers

A bill that would require new semiautomatic pistols in New York to be capable of microstamping passed the Assembly today.

If it passes the Senate and is signed, New York would be the second state behind California with such a requirement.

nysenate.gov/legislation/bi… This bill is among several in Gov. Kathy Hochul and Democratic leaderships' gun reform package. It is the first in the package to pass either chamber.

People often forget there are other regulations that could potentially mitigate the effects of gun violence without touching the firearm itself.

In the absence of firearms regulations, you could regulate ammunition and magazines. Congress or legislatures could require background checks on ammunition purchases.

They could track, limit, or place waiting periods on ammunition purchases.

They could place new taxes or increase existing taxes on ammunition.

They could require sellers to obtain a FFL.

My latest: The NYPD is tracking possible shooters in a secretive new database.

Civil liberties advocates worry the NYPD is repeating the mistakes it made with its gangs list — and that innocent people are being tracked without even knowing it.

DLive — a platform used by a number of far-right figures to live stream Capitol chaos — has banned several far-right figures in the last few days.

That list now includes Vincent James Foxx, a holocaust denier and propagandist for a now-defunct white supremacist group. You might've never heard of DLive before, but in addition to having little to no moderation before Jan. 6, DLive was monetizing extremism, allowing far-right figures to profit off its tipping mechanism, as @MeganSquire0 has pointed out.

Thread: The insurrection was seeded on social media platforms, then planned and broadcast on far-right sites.

"We’re headed right back to where we were on April 1, and I don’t think there’s any appetite among the general population nor of our political leaders to do much more about it,” said Dr. Michael Saag, an infectious disease expert at UAB.

Check the date. A paper published this in 2019. Wow. I took a dive into old issues of The Democrat-Reporter.

After a review of dozens of issues of the paper, it's clear the racist editorial brought to light yesterday was not a one-off event. It's common.
