In 2022, lobbying groups spent $25bn on behalf of the railroad industry to lobby Congress.

Norfolk Southern, responsible for the East Palestine derailment, was the 4th biggest spender

They offered East Palestine $25,000 compensation In addition to the lobbying money, the railroads’ corporate PACs contributed to the political campaigns of Democrats and Republicans alike

Norfolk Southern was the 2nd biggest contributor, giving more to Democrats than Republicans

Around 2006-07 I saw a huge push to have “all students college ready”. It became part of the mission, because dammit we were failing those kids if we didn’t get them into college

This followed on the heels of the 2005 Bankruptcy bill And looking back at the last 20 years of tuition, you can see that was also when rates started to skyrocket

For me, there’s no clearer picture of organized and predatory financialization of what should be ‘the commons’ - education
