1/5 Remarkable accomplishment: A zero-C steel plant in Sweden, close to market costs. Bravo all 👏👏👏

A few thoughts on its relevance & importance. 2/5 The plant uses existing technology (direct reduction of iron - DRI - with H2 electrolysis from nuclear & hydro power). It then upgrades the "sponge iron" to "pig iron" with an electric arc furnace (EAF). Core tech here.

What's new is combining them.

1/5 a thread of mothballing the PetraNova CCS facility.

Last week @cleanaircatf wrote a short piece on the topic, including links to key reports & documents that provide support my points below 👇

Photo: @TrishBadger @Reuters 2/5 First order of business: PetraNova came in on time, on budget, and has successfully wrangled 4 million tons CO2 since commissioning in 2017. It did exactly what is was supposed to do and well.

Thanks @NRGgg & @fossilenergygov

1/9 I echo the @vsiv comment - may all public reps be as clear & thoughtful as @SeanCasten and as good at their jobs.

Of course, as someone cited in this article, I respectfully disagree on many points of his thoughtful thread 👇 Here's a few of my thoughts: 2a/9 Rep. Casten is incorrect about H2 storage. My former mates from @Livermore_Lab built a cryo-compressed tank in 2006. Gen 2 got 1000 km on a single fill in a Prius. Works great. Already used in many H2 vehicles on the road. llnl.gov/news/llnl's-pr…

1/9 Hey Energy Twitter! A few thoughts on @drvox fine new article on power-to-gas (#PtG) as described by @WartsilaEnergy. Both good pieces of work. I have a few thoughts & friendly amendments. Thanks for the prompt, @JasonBordoff

vox.com/energy-and-env… 2/9 #PtG technologies convert CO2 & H2 to methane. There are many ways to do this: check out companies like @GlobalSunfire @Greyrockenergy & @Opus12CO2. If CO2 feedstocks come from point sources it recycles once. If it comes from the air by DAC, it’s circular C economy.
