This week, WVU’s School of Art & Design had their academic appeal. With the final recs, WV is poised to lose a lynchpin in our community, our history, & 1 of WV’s most special international partnerships.

Unfortunately, the ceramics studio itself is likely to be literally dismantled very soon. It may be kicked out to make room for other mergers.

In 2021 alone, 30 kids in WV were married.

100% of them were married to an adult 18 years old or older.

Average age gap? 4.83 years.

Largest gap? 33 years.

These are our children. This is something we can change. @wvlegislature , time to pass HB3018, SB158. ACTION NEEDED: Contact House and Senate Judiciary committee members, ask them to put HB3018 and SB158 on judiciary committee agendas!

Child Marriage & Faith: While #wv law has NO minimum age for marriage, resulting in kids as young as 14 being married recently, #ChildMarriage is banned by many religious communities.

Result? Civil WV marriages that won’t be recognized by church. 🧵 Here are just a few faiths that already ban marriage below either 16 or 18 years old:

Over 700 WV children married 2012-2021.
Only 3 of 55 counties reported 0 child marriages.
16 counties: more than 1 in every 100 marriages involves child

Child Marriage in WV isn’t often high school juniors falling in love. There’s no minimum age & the younger the child? The older their spouse is likely to be. Ew.

Avg age gap in WV 2021-2022
14-16 year olds: 4+ years
17 year olds: 3.2 years
