If it’s self-evident to you that Los Angeles is failing to solve the homeless crisis but not so clear why, I’ll attempted to summarize the unlikely combination of politics, business models, corruption and drugs that got us here. 🧵1/x
Los Angeles has *by far* the largest unsheltered homeless population in the nation. The city’s shelter system is not capable of serving even a fraction of those in need. However the city doesn’t create more shelters because they have been deemed carceral. 2/x

Extremists like Kenneth Mejia, Mike Bonin, Erin Darling, Eunisses Hernandez and Faisal Gil have have made the fundamental error of mistaking mental illness and addiction for poverty. In doing so they have popularized language that lends destructive power to this basic error. 2/12

My issues with Mike Bonin initially stemmed from incidents my family has experienced over the last year. We have been threatened, intimidated and repeatedly burglarized.
