Why can’t I get a family doctor? A thread. There aren’t enough of us practicing comprehensive family medicine to cover the workload. Why? /1
Our systems actively discourage medical students from considering family medicine. They regularly hear things like “are you going to specialize or JUST be a GP/family doc?” They’ll often hear jokes about how only people who couldn’t do anything else become family docs. /2

So, you’re at home with your family and the smoke detector goes off. You smell smoke and are pretty sure there is a fire. Do you keep the kids inside, hope that the fire isn’t bad, assume they probably are fine with a little bit of smoke inhalation? /1

I’m a family doctor in Saskatoon. I’ve never received funding from a drug company for research. I’ve never been paid to talk about any drug or vaccine anywhere. The most expensive thing a drug company has ever given me is a uterus model for practicing/teaching IUD insertion. /1
It probably costs them $10 to produce. I don’t remember which company gave it to me. I honestly don’t know which companies make which IUDs anyway. /2

Every week, I watch more and more of my patients results come back positive for COVID. Each time I get one, I do a quick mental recap of that patient’s health status. Why? So I can decide which ones I think are most at risk for dying. /2

Is school important for kids? Absolutely! Is social contact with peers important for kids? Of course! Would I love to have my kids back in school in the fall? Duh - I’m not an elementary school teacher. 1/2
My concern isn’t based on wanting schools closed forever. It’s not about mandatory masking. My concern is that our government isn’t willing to invest the money required to make schools safer and better. 2/

My thoughts on this abysmal “Safe Schools” plan. A thread.
1 - “appropriate time to implement the required safety measures”. We shut schools in March. It is now August 4. School is set to open Sept 1. That’s less than ONE MONTH.
