Remember the "3D Flying Objects" screen saver? One day, I will tell you the story about how this screen saver almost got me fired from Microsoft. (You will not be surprised to learn that this has more to do with terrible management than the screen saver itself.) Ok fine, today is the day. So the year is ~2002, and I am doing debug escalation for our OEM partners in Premier support. At that time, there was no dedicated group for these companies. It was just me and @bluewhackadoo cherry picking their cases b/c they were fun to work on. 2/x

The workplace culture at Microsoft has improved so much the last 7 years, but one area it has gone backwards is making teams and groups feel a sense of collective accomplishment and appreciation. When you "ship" every 6 months, nothing feels special. It's hard to be excited. In the days of less frequent releases, and most software vs services focus, there used to be milestones and releases. You'd throw a ship party. Everyone would come together and share the joy in a job well done. Now? "Code lockdown for next semester is in 2 weeks. Get to work!"

Someone just submitted a PR Github, asking for review...to the entire Azure org. Like, everyone. If that's not tens of thousands of employees, I will be shocked. This should be a fun set of reviews for them. ...and the first "Why am I getting this?" Reply All has arrived.

Begun, the Bedlam Wars have.

Today’s dinner is gonna be a simple but delicious penne alla vodka, with some garlic bread and roasted broccolini. I’m following the basic guidelines from here, but will modify to suit my experiences. I’ll live tweet anyway because fun! seriouseats.com/recipes/2020/0…

Every time you hear a Microsoft executive talk about the values of the company, never forget that the company operates a political PAC that continues to contribute money to people who oppose those values, and refuses to act on employee dissatisfaction with this hypocrisy. There is no requirement that the company operate a PAC. It did not have one for the first 20+ years of its existence. Apple does not operate one. The refusal to get rid of MSPAC despite the fact that it continues to make a mockery of the SLT's stated values is a CHOICE.

Great story on @arstechnica about VxWorks and other Real-time Operating Systems. (RTOS) arstechnica.com/features/2020/…
Let me share a ~22 year old story about working with Wind River on an VxWorks/Win98 interop issue. [1/8] Background: It's 1998, I am still new at MSFT, and my job is handling Win9x support escalations. Except for the largest of companies, everyone just called the 800 number. Even Wind River. They called in, and the answering tech immediately knew they were in over their head. [2/8]
