Med student tips for when you do SubIs (some dos and don’ts):
🙏 prepare before the OR (if you need help with HOW, ask your resident for advise)
🤓 bring your gloves to the scrub tech and introduce yourself to the team
🛞wheel the pt in and out of the room, and help transfer 🗣 Ask to give presentations on rounds, halfway through - ask for feedback on how to improve
🚫 don’t try and engage in small talk during a difficult case, it’s distracting (don’t worry, we will engage with you I promise)
💉 carry some supplies with you on rounds (lube etc)

I read "Day 1 - A world made for men." by
@emmabgo
.
Excellent piece, that made me recognize that I inhabit a subspecialized work world that is specifically designed for men.
A thread:
nytimes.com/programs/women…
Every time I need to put the cover on the sterile light-handles, I scan the room: “Hi, tall friend! Can you help me?”.
For those of us who work in the operating room (OR), it is immediately evident that the room was designed with a much taller person in mind… a man.
