We just filed this motion for leave to intervene in the SEC v. Ripple Case, which seeks billions in penalties from Ripple based on its cryptocurrency XRP, which the SEC claims is an unregistered security.

here's the brief: bit.ly/3Is1uQ3 I represent Rosyln Layton, a columnist and scholar, who seeks to intervene in this action to oppose the sealing of certain documents that the SEC offered in support of its summary judgment motion.

I maintain that one of the best ways to improve your writing is to consume great writing.

And it doesn't really matter the source. Great fiction writing, great nonfiction writing, and great legal writing all have lessons to tell us about doing our jobs better as communicators. And one of the very best communicators out there is @edyong209, Science writer for @TheAtlantic. Consider his latest piece, which I picked up this morning.

Here's a little thread that's timely since it's the start of summer associate season. And it is about the great enemy of good writing: time. You want to write well. You've seen good writing and you want to make your writing better. You're committed to doing it. But how? Making your writing better takes time.

Quick thread about something I've been thinking about for a while: Introductions and summaries. These are key pieces of a brief, but a lot of lawyers, new and old, don't really know what they are *for.*

This thread is so perfect that there's not much to add, but Imma do it anyway.

I hate traditional "networking" stuff, but I network all the time. Twitter is networking. My work is networking, and most of all, my lunchtimes and coffee breaks are spent networking. That is because to me, "networking" means meeting people (1) I think are cool (2) who I would like to work with and (3) I do not currently know.

Quick legal writing thread that applies to lawyerly development more broadly:

When you're a young lawyer, you will try to write well only to realize you've failed. You'll find your ideas aren't as brilliant as @SEHarringtonDC's, your words not as lucid and crisply stated as @KannonShanmugam's, nor as lively and memorable as Miguel Estrada's.

And you'll feel bad.

Sorry I’m late to the #PracticeTuesday party, but a word on talking yourself up: Do it. You owe it to yourself and your future employer. You are amazing, and if you don’t help them know how, then the position will be filled by a less amazing, less appropriate person. Net loss. “Yes but Carl, don’t be stupid. It’s certainly possible to be too braggy. I’ve seen it done. How do I avoid going too far?”

Pretty easy, really, if you are the type of person to worry about whether you’ve gone too far. You’ve got the internal regulator that braggy people lack.
