Having a proper lazy day today. Fun lazy day ruined by headache. Boo.

Would there be any interest in a one-off audio project about the thing that I did my Master's thesis on? I'm currently re-reading my thesis and groaning at the spelling errors and repeated word choices. And this is why you didn't get that A, Donaldson.

I entirely blame @patrickhwillems for this spontaneous Ebay purchase. Image There is A LOT going on in Wolf.

Most of it is a publishing house drama? And Jack Nicholson as a werewolf looks exactly like Creature from Carry On Screaming? And mega-deviant of American cinema James Spader is here? And also Niles Crane?!

This is my big problem with biopic acting in general: People get too bogged down in impersonation to the point where they may as well be Disney animatronics. It's far preferable to see an actor take risks & eschew the tics in favour of something more accurate in terms of essence. This is one of the reasons I give Renee Zellweger a lot of credit for her Judy Garland performance. No, it's not a pinpoint accurate recreation of Garland but it nails that fragile bird energy she had, as well as the oft-overlooked wit, the tiredness, the tenacity, etc.

When you're a shitty bigot and also a lover of bad graphic design.

lgbtqnation.com/2020/09/j-k-ro… I understand that, in the grand scheme of Britain's toxic transphobia problem, the fact that these people scramble to throw their cash at bad art & culture is the least of it, but it still entertains me somewhat to see all these bigots "protest" by supporting the stupidest crap.

It's been a while since I shared some stuff I wrote, so here's my shameless plug thread. Let's start off with @SYFYFANGRRLS!

I wrote about the gendered toy battles of the 1980s and the unique status held by one She-Ra.

W/E is genuinely one of the worst films I've ever seen, but the sheen egomania that will be Madonna writing & directing her own biopic should at least be mildly hilarious.

I want to pre-emptively call dibs on the inevitable Vanity Fair oral history of the behind-the-scenes drama from this movie.

Name a film that you would describe as being not good but wonderful; A technically bad piece of work that is still somehow brilliant.

Think of stuff like Winter's Tale or 60% of Gerard Butler's output. When the world stops burning, someone should organize a Cats/Winter's Tale midnight madness double bill.

The "protest" they held in Dundee recently was almost entirely white women and I hear a LOT of very weird conspiracies being spewed from that crowd. There are few truly effective ways to debunk conspiracies, especially the wholly ludicrous ones, because the goalposts are always moving and it's very easy to get people riled up by insisting their fears and anger are part of a legitimate concern. It's deeply insidious.

Screen Rant was the 1st site to hire me as a professional writer. I'm forever thankful for the editors there who took a chance on a miserable unemployed blogger.
But it was long past time for me to move on & recent events made the decision to leave the features team much easier. I wrote some good stuff, I made some good friends, and it helped me onto my current professional path, but the site's response to that Boseman piece was unsatisfactory, in my opinion. There are much wider questions to be asked regarding fair pay, diverse hirings, etc.

This is admittedly a shaky comparison but the takeover of places like OnlyFans by major celebs reminds me somewhat of the world of children's publishing, where famous folks have so thoroughly dominated the market that it's now near-impossible for working writers to breakthrough. Obviously, direct comparisons can't be drawn. OnlyFans being hijacked by celebs over the sex workers who found solace there is a different dynamic, but it's worth noting how dominance of the mainstream in formerly niche places always ends in the exclusion of those who started it.

Well, the good news is that my mind wasn't making up all my foot pain and weird shoe problems. The bad news is that the official diagnosis is something much shittier. Yay? I had to buy ankle braces for both of my feet (and they don't sell them in pairs so thanks a lot for that cost increase?!) and they are faintly terrifying-looking things.

Seriously, if there's a film you love and you don't already own a physical copy of it, go buy one now. Still side-eyeing every single person on this here hellsite who cheered on the Disney acquisition of Fox. Shock horror, corporate media monopolies are entirely awful.
