THREAD: 20 yrs ago today, the BBC started a radio station in celebration of black music and culture. BBC @1Xtra was special in many ways. And most importantly it was full of staff who *lived* the culture, we were not spectators dipping into and demonising it like many others…
They didn’t find staff from job ads in broadsheet newspapers and uni schemes - they took to streets up and down the country to find new talent, new voices, new story tellers. The unifier? We loved the culture. I do find it hilarious when organisations now say they can’t find

Just a word of warning if you're planning on travelling this summer. My brother just got back from being held in a immigration holding cell thing in Switzerland. His airline put him on an indirect flight to Mallorca from the UK via Switzerland...
..and specifically told him the flight would be fine. They were then held by immigration officials in the Swiss airport who told them as they're not double vaccinated they can't be there, and that the airline was wrong. So.. he and his mates were held in the airport for

The least surprising thing about the racist abuse aimed at black players last night, is that some of the Twitter accounts use real names.
These individuals believe they're so powerful they can aim disgusting language at England players... and feel they'll be no repercussions.
So what some sections of society has to understand, and deal with (whether it wants to or not) is why these people feel emboldened to do it.
Because if they can do it to 3 of the most powerful men in football last night *using their real names*, what else are they capable of?

SHORT THREAD: Let’s break down the Danny Baker situation. Meghan has been subject to horrific/veiled racist abuse & prejudice online and in print since the start of their relationship. Of which we are ALL aware.
To post a pic picturing a 3-day old baby of mixed heritage as a monkey, then claim it was a joke? That’s old-school prejudice and racism at its peak. And for a trusted broadcaster working at a public service broadcaster to feed that prejudice? It’s unacceptable.
