I think the real third rail is that nobody wants to talk about whether and how much corporations should be allowed to take advantage of very stupid people. the left doesn't want to admit they're stupid. The right doesn't want to admit it's taking advantage. So it's an impasse.

Begging, pleading with the right to stop doing crime-data trutherism. It's a bad look when the left does it, and it's a bad look when we do it! 1) NIBRS non-participation was an issue in 2021, when it may have downplayed the *growth* in the crime level. But, as @Crimealytics has argued, it's just not an issue anymore, both because the FBI is letting PDs report under SRS, and because UCR coverage grew.

Camping enforcement isn’t a solution to homelessness. It is a solution to public disorderliness and dangerous conditions. Obviously the solution to people not having places to live is housing and/or shelter. But letting people take over public spaces until we resolve that problem is neither sensible nor humane as a solution.

Here's a quick thread on the Americans who parachuted behind enemy lines on D-Day, which is among the most insane things anyone has ever done in military combat. (Screenshots are from John Keegan's _Six Armies In Normandy_.) First of all, it is important to remember that there basically were no parachutists prior to WWII. And the Allies only belatedly figured out the technique, with a lot of men dying along the way.

That's a share, not a rate. Like yes, most homicide is intraracial, so the shares of homicide that are intraracial are similar between black and white offenders. But the Maher point is that black *rates* of homicide are much higher, and *because* homicide is intraracial, victims are mostly also black.

The pardon seems like small beans: nobody's currently in federal prison for marijuana, and it sounds like historical convictions number in the thousands, which is not a lot. I would guess that the number with *only* a federal mj possession conviction is even smaller. 1/ That said, it's good to remember that many of those convictions are probably plea deals. Even if Biden isn't explicitly pardoning convicted dealers, the guys who the feds are actually charging with MJ possession are not mostly kids in the wrong place at the wrong time. 2/

declining TFR != declining population. Indeed, declining TFR makes emigration more attractive ceteris paribus! And if first-gen is more likely to be conservative than second-gen, you want to dilute the influence of the woke second-geners... (That, ofc., granting the premise that second-gen east Asians are ideologically woke, as opposed to just doing what SES says they should. Will have to dig into that)

I've seen a couple variations on this point (I just happen to know @herandrews @njhochman), i.e. that Asian's Democratic preference is durable across a long time period. The thing is, that's not perfectly accurate. 🧵 It's hard to discern how Asians voted prior to the early '90s, because they were too small a group to show up in polls. But they seemed to lean right. The first and third Asian Senators, Hiram Fong and the infamously conservative S. I. Hayakawa, were conservatives.
