101 years on, Tulsa Race Massacre survivors and descendants are still fighting for long-delayed justice

Mine for @KWGSNEWS:

publicradiotulsa.org/local-regional… .@AttorneyDamario said the white mob of 1921 had failed.

“The stated goal of the Tulsa Race Massacre was to 'run the Negro out of Tulsa.’ To completely eradicate our existence here. Yet here we are. And we're not just here — we're still fighting.”

“I’ve actually got my Indian card. My six children with blonde hair and blue eyes, they all have their Indian card,” @GovStitt says on Tucker Carlson’s Fox News show while discussing McGirt. I know I said I was going to sleep but then I saw Stitt would be on Tucker any minute and I guess I love to torture myself staying up past my bedtime to watch what I could just watch in the morning 🙃

'This is gonna be so fun,' TPD officer says before violent arrest of elderly woman in apparent mental health crisis

publicradiotulsa.org/local-regional… This incident reminded me of this one in Colorado, where officers laughed about violently arresting a woman with dementia.

I’m at the Oklahoma History Center in Oklahoma City where @JimInhofe is expected shortly to announce his intentions to retire from the U.S. Senate and endorse the candidacy of his chief of staff @LukeHollandOK to replace him. Inhofe’s been in politics since the 1960s. A gentleman with the Inhofe/Holland folks says @JimInhofe is not here in person today because he has COVID. Inhofe is calling in. Holland is here and about to take to the lectern.

Since I started this gig in March 2020, I’ve watched @GovStitt’s office show contempt toward Oklahoma citizens a number of times. Here’s his comms director @CarlyAtch interacting with a constituent just now: Before that, here’s @CharlieHannema brusquely closing a door on the mother of Julius Jones, who the governor kept in the lurch until at the last minute declaring he wouldn’t kill Jones (while at the same time he rejected the parole board’s recommendation to grant life w/ parole)

INTEGRIS, SSM St. Anthony, Mercy and OU Health officials are holding a joint press conference about the COVID crisis.

Dr. Julie Watson, INTEGRIS: "Despite our best efforts, we may not be able to provide care as we normally would." As many as 1,000 HCWs out sick. Watson: "This time it feels and sometimes even looks like a war zone." Patients being treated in hallways and closets. Patients waiting 24 hours for ICU beds to open. Can't accept patients from rural hospitals. "There is no rest for the weary."

The state typically doesn’t put out COVID situation reports over the weekends but, yes, wow, this is record-shatteringly bad news. Oklahoma is in real trouble. If we accept experts’ most conservative estimate — that the active case number reported by the state is a threefold undercount — right now, at minimum, one in every 15 Oklahomans is actively infected.

I'm not an idiot* -- I get what's going on with the Oklahoma delegation not answering insurrection questions. I get that it might seem annoying / "jilted lover"-y for me to keep harping on the point, tagging flacks, etc. 1/

*in this regard But by choosing to side with Trump's big lie and the insurrectionists + voting to overturn the 2020 election, @repkevinhern @RepBice @RepFrankLucas @TomColeOK04 @RepMullin made not only news but history. It'd be remiss of reporters who cover them not to press. 2/

Last year on the day of the insurrection, I sent 2 questions (left) to the 5 members of Congress from Oklahoma, who all went on to vote to reject the election results. No replies. Ahead of the anniversary tmrw, I’ve re-asked one q & added two more (right). Will post any replies. ImageImage I honestly don’t really like reporting on politics and political figures. But we kind of have to cover the attempt to subvert American democracy, so I have to ask questions of lawmakers who voted to reject the will of the voters. I’m with you, would rather be doing other stuff!

January 6th was, in fact, an insurrection, carried out by violent supporters of then-President Trump who sought to kill elected officials and install him into a second term despite his blowout loss to Joe Biden in 2020. The senator is either misinformed or lying. “Why give him attention?” It’s a fair question. But we know this sort of rhetoric is dangerous and he’s a sitting state lawmaker running for U.S. Senate.

The White House coronavirus task force currently ranks Oklahoma first out of all 50 states for COVID-19 test positivity.

But the @GovStitt administration has opted to stop receiving and publishing the task force's weekly reports.

publicradiotulsa.org/post/stitt-adm… These White House reports have been, like, a whole thing.

A timeline thread:

Back in July, @publicintegrity / @l_e_whyte leaked a WH report showing Oklahoma was a red zone state.

“Tom was taken to St. Mary’s in Enid.

However, the ER was full, and the nearest open bed was 70 miles away in Alva, Okla.” And out of small Oklahoma hospitals like Alva's, stories like this: "She sat in the ER, I think, for 16, 17, 18 hours in critical condition, waiting for care. Now, she received care... but not the level that she needed."

Broken Arrow City Council about to vote on whether they want to pass a resolution "strongly encouraging the use of masks"

There was a ton of misinformation about masks/COVID at their last meeting so I wouldn't take it as a given that even this will pass, but, let's see Image Michael Gillespie, husband of Councilor Christi Gillespie, says in public comment there's "obviously" no science proving masks/mask mandates work. (This is false. Masks work, mask mandates reduce spread of COVID-19.)

Opposes the resolution strongly encouraging the use of masks. Image
