Interesting thread on AUTOCAT regarding what defines rarity:
Q. How old does a book have to be before it is considered 'rare'?
A. Age has nothing to do with rarity
A. Old is not rare. What makes a book rare is the demand for a book that is
hard to find ...
You can have a book from 1600, and if there are lots of
copies, and no demand, it isn't rare. It is just old.
A. Many libraries make a date-based shelving decision as part of their policy. For example, anything pre-1800 goes to rare book storage.
