When the AFP handed down their decision not to investigate Angus Taylor over his use of a falsified document to attack me, and the work of the City, a lot of people told me they were not surprised.

theguardian.com/australia-news… The AFP ruled there was no sufficient harm done to warrant an investigation, but did not bother to interview me as a factor in determining that. Now we know they didn’t speak to the Minister either.

BREAKING: We’re bringing our net zero emissions target forward a decade, from 2050 to 2040!

The accelerated target will form part of the City’s new strategic plan, Sustainable Sydney 2050 – it’s our responsibility to do all we can to reduce emissions steeper and sooner. It’s not going to be easy, but while the Federal Governments continue to fail us, we will be getting on with the job of responding to the climate emergency.

I’ve just finished our final pre-event press briefing for #SydNYE. I wanted to share with you my opening remarks, to help further explain why the event is still going ahead.

Please watch the video.
I explain why we couldn’t cancel tonight’s event, and also how we will be channelling it to support Australian communities who have been impacted by the bushfires, by encouraging people to donate to the @RedCrossAU disaster recovery and relief fund.

Today’s Daily Telegraph features a double-page spread challenging the City’s commitment to climate action by accusing us of flying too much.

Sound familiar? It’s the same argument Minister Taylor levelled at the City some weeks ago. We’re talking about fewer than 30 return flights each year, for the entirety of the City’s 2,000 staff. Travel that allows city representatives to meet their international counterparts, to share experience, learn and return with a better understanding of global best practice.

I am very concerned about the legislation being introduced by the NSW Government that would stop overseas greenhouse gas emissions from export coal being considered when courts are approving new mines.

smh.com.au/politics/nsw/n… It is a backward step that ignores our shared responsibility for reducing global emissions. I fear this could stymie the NSW justice system and our Independent Planning Commission, because it will remove responsibility for emissions from Australian coal that is burnt overseas.
