Idk how to have this convo but we do need to talk about the way some African immigrants talk about US slavery/democracy. There is this callousness and lack of understanding that to Black ppl, slavery isn’t just some event that happened. These are blood debts still left unpaid. I was having a conversation with a Nigerian acquaintance from law school that said America is the freest country and best democracy in the world bc she had been able to acquire the life she wanted to live here. She also wanted to commend the US for fighting the civil war
