From AI-generated images to manipulated videos, it’s common to come across misleading media. Today we’re piloting a feature that puts a superpower into contributors’ hands: Notes on Media

Notes attached to an image will automatically appear on recent & future matching images. twitter.com/i/web/status/1… If you're a contributor with a Writing Impact of 10 or above, you’ll see a new option on some Tweets to mark your notes as “About the image”. This option can be selected when you believe the media is potentially misleading in itself, regardless of which Tweet it is featured in. Image

Just launched an algorithm update that keeps note statuses and contributor impact scores more stable as we expand Community Notes. In addition to helping going forward, it boosts existing contributor impact scores by better recognizing helpful past contributions. Details 🧵 As the program expands, older data comprise an increasingly small fraction of the dataset, and scores on older notes have tended to fluctuate causing some of them to lose Helpful status.

Exciting update to our open source ranking algorithm that improves note quality, making it less likely that mediocre or unhelpful notes appear on Tweets. In the spirit of #AlgorithmicTransparency, here’s how and why it works… Some notes appear on Tweets, then later disappear. As more ratings come in, they lose their Helpful status. This kind of self-correction is a good thing, but we consider these “false positives” — not necessarily bad notes, but ultimately not broadly helpful enough to show.

🧵 Our research shows that people who see a Tweet with a Helpful Birdwatch note are, on average, 15-35% less likely to Like/Retweet it. And, on average, people from across the political spectrum are 20-40% less likely to agree with a misleading Tweet after reading a note on it.
