In high school I was a champion in intellectual olympics for Kazakh history. I read books & attended lectures of the renowned historians while still barely 16. At Uni I scored the highest in my history class taught by one of the biggest historian name in the field. Later, when I worked in the archives for my first book, I met my history teacher. He passed me the docs on December 1986 protests in Almaty and nodded silently. It was the best gift ever.

My maternal great grandfather lived 2 days after getting released from the NKVD headquarters in Kazakhstan. He was beaten up so much that he died shortly after release. His family was stripped of his assets (it was a very wealthy family). My grandmother was “enemy of state” till about 1960s. An ethnic minority in the Kazakh SSR with such a painful label, she managed to live an honourable life, bring up her 7 kids & 10 grandchildren. She spoke many languages, but Russian with accent, remained pious despite restrictions &taught me how to decolonize myself
