As this week begins and the nation prepares to observe the first anniversary of the deadly Robb Elementary School shooting in Uvalde, TX, I’m thinking of the families & sweet babies I’ve grown to know and hold dear over the course of a horrendous, grief-stricken year.
I’m thinking about little Uzi, who loved Spider-Man and who wanted to be a police officer when he grew up and who would always run to anywhere and everywhere he went and who inexplicably dunked his apple slices in bbq sauce and who loved video games and had an infectious smile.

In 5 days the nation will mark the one year anniversary of the Robb Elementary School shooting in Uvalde, TX. One year since 19 fourth graders & 2 teachers were shot & killed inside their classrooms.
I can still remember how it felt driving into Uvalde the day after the shooting
The grief. The pain. The shock. It was so thick you could feel it — as if I could stick my hand out & pull the horror from the hot Texas air and squeeze the heartbreak from it, the utter sadness in my hand spilling out & covering every corner of that small, tight-knit town.

It’s impossible not to think of all the Ukrainian moms spending #MothersDay displaced, in refugee camps, in bunkers, fearing for their families, mourning, fighting for their country, or those who are no longer here at all.
It’s an honor to have shared so many of their stories.
Like Olesia, who was forced to flee Ukraine at 38 weeks pregnant and who safely gave birth to her daughter, Kira, who loves to sleep, eat and recently smiled for the very first time. today.com/parents/pregna…

For what will likely be the last #MothersDay before Roe v Wade falls, for @TODAYshow@TODAY_Parents I spoke to moms who had abortions and who say access to abortion care is the reason why they’re the people and the moms they are today.

Today I interviewed a victim/survivor of Larry Nassar, who shocked me when she said I was the first and only reporter to ever do a trauma-informed interview with her.
Fellow reporters, this should be standard procedure by now.
Check in w/your interviewee regularly incase they need a beat. Encourage them to look for signs of overwhelm/anxiety in their body. Remind them that they don't have to answer questions they don't want to. Let them know a pub date so they can prepare.
It all makes a difference.

Men like Kavanaugh believe causing women pain is just a rite of passage; a fun & entertaining exercise of their birthright on their way to positions of power. And we all watched how men like Kavanaugh respond when that birthright is questioned.
My abusive father laughed after he choked me unconscious. After hitting me he would stand over me & sneer. The abuse was an exercise of his power — a power he believed endoweded by god, because he was a devout Christian — and that exercise, for him, was fun. It was reassuring.

All my love, strength, & solidarity to people who’ve been made to re-live, re-tell, and re-visit their miscarriages, ectopic pregnancies, stillbirths, and other pregnancy & infant losses as a result of anti-abortion laws championed by forced-birth advocates & politicians.
Those trying to force people into parenthood think people who have miscarriages and people who have abortions are at the opposite end of the spectrum: that we’re at war with one another. But in so many ways and in many cases, we are one and the same.

According to Jeff Sessions and Sarah Sanders, the Bible supports the Trump administration's family separation policy. Here's a thread of bible verses Sessions & Sanders should peruse (because apparently separation of church & state is no longer a thing): #FamiliesBelongTogether
Exodus 22: 21: "You must not mistreat or oppress foreigners in any way. Remember, you yourselves were once foreigners in the land of Egypt." #FamiliesBelongTogether
