🧵 For those who don’t know, Johann Andreas Eisenmenger (1654-1704) was a distinguished Orientalist from the Electorate of the Palatinate and later professor of Oriental languages at the University of Heidelberg, ranking among the most erudite scholars of rabbinic literature in early modern Europe. Born in Mannheim to an official in the service of the Elector, Eisenmenger demonstrated exceptional zeal for Hebrew studies and Semitic languages during his time at the Collegium Sapientiae in Heidelberg. This early promise led the Elector to support his further education abroad, sending him to England and Holland to deepen his linguistic mastery. He ultimately acquired proficiency in Hebrew, Aramaic, Arabic, and related tongues.

Eisenmenger's immersion in rabbinic Judaism intensified during an extended stay in Amsterdam around 1680-1681, where encounters with Jewish scholars and converts from Christianity to Judaism stirred his indignation and prompted a systematic investigation. For nearly nineteen years, he pursued rigorous study of post-biblical Jewish texts, often assisted by Jewish tutors in Heidelberg and later in Frankfurt am Main. To gain access to these sources and build trust, he presented himself as a sincere seeker interested in conversion to Judaism. 🧵The fruit of this labor, Entdecktes Judenthum (Judaism Exposed), was completed and printed in Frankfurt in 1700 in an edition of approximately 2,000 copies. The work's appearance in German, rather than Latin, alarmed segments of the Jewish community, who feared it could exacerbate anti-Jewish sentiments amid recent unrest in regions like Franconia and Bamberg. Influential court Jews, including Samuel Oppenheimer and Samson Wertheimer, petitioned Emperor Leopold I, who ordered the entire stock confiscated and suppressed to prevent potential disturbances.

Eisenmenger, appointed professor of Oriental languages at Heidelberg around this time due to the Elector's interest in his scholarship, died in 1704 without seeing his work widely disseminated. His heirs sought to revive it, appealing to the King of Prussia, Friedrich Wilhelm I. 🧵 Entdecktes Judenthum was published in two parts/volumes, and was often rebound as one thick 2000-page volume. I was under the impression that the tome I acquired was one of these 2-in-1, as the description stated the title page and chapter pages for part 2 were missing.

But this was not the case. I only have part 1, which contains 19 chapters and has 1111 pages.

🧵 This won’t be an easy endeavor, not only due to the breadth of the work but also due to it being in Early New High German and fraktur.

And in general, translating anything requires a certain feeling of words you’re trying to express. Even the title itself directly translates to “Discovered Judaism”, but what Eisenmenger is trying to convey is that he is uncovering it, revealing it, bringing it into the light of day, unmasking it, or better - exposing it. To separate this work from others that may follow, I’ll be calling it “Entdecktes Judenthum - Judaism Exposed”.

Do they do so in apostasy and rebellion, or is it in spiritual restoration as believers in Christ - the word made flesh (John 1:14), the fulfillment of the law (Matthew 5:17)?

Below is a list of prophecies that connect the return of Israel (the 10 northern tribes) and Judah (the 3 southern tribes) to the land with their spiritual restoration as believers in Christ, indicating they return in a state of faithfulness rather than apostasy.

Each passage emphasizes both the return to the land and their transformed, believing state in Christ. 🧵 Ezekiel 36:24-28

Context: God promises to gather the scattered Israelites, bring them back to their land, and spiritually renew them.

“For I will take you from among the heathen, and gather you out of all countries, and will bring you into your own land. Then will I sprinkle clean water upon you, and ye shall be clean: from all your filthiness, and from all your idols, will I cleanse you. A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh. And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them. And ye shall dwell in the land that I gave to your fathers; and ye shall be my people, and I will be your God.”

Relevance: The return to the land is explicitly linked to cleansing from idolatry, a new heart, and obedience through God’s Spirit, indicating they return as believers in Christ.

ALL Israel is comprised of 12/13 different tribes, and after King David and King Solomon’s rule over the Kingdom of Israel, it was split into two kingdoms - the northern Kingdom of Israel and the southern Kingdom of Judah - with ten tribes going to the north (Reuben, Simeon, Issachar, Zebulun, Dan, Naphtali, Gad, Asher, and Joseph which was split into the 1/2 tribes of Manasseh and Ephraim) and three tribes going to the south (Benjamin, Levi, and Judah).

Prophecy refers to these two groups as Israel and Judah.

The verse Ted and Tucker are talking about is Genesis 12:2-3, and it is a promise by God to Abram/Abraham (thee/thy/thou is singular “you”) of CHRIST, which Paul stated unequivocally in Galatians 3:

Christ is the promised seed of Abraham. Christ is the promised root/tree in Romans 11:16-21, the vine in John 15:1-6.

Notice Genesis 12:2-3 says nothing of blessing “Israel” or the “nation of Israel” or “Jewish people” - it’s about Abram, blessing Abram, saying Abram will be a blessing, and those who bless Abram would be blessed. 🧵 God DOES say a great nation will come from Abraham, and if you read even further in Genesis 17:

And I will make my covenant between me and thee, and will multiply thee exceedingly… and thou shalt be a father of many nations. Neither shall thy name any more be called Abram, but thy name shall be Abraham; for a father of many nations have I made thee. And I will make thee exceeding fruitful, and I will make nations of thee, and kings shall come out of thee.

Not only did God promise Abraham that a great nation would come from him in Genesis 12:2, but God promised that A MULTITUDE OF NATIONS AND KINGS would come from him in Genesis 17.

These verses still aren’t about blessing or cursing “the nation of Israel or Jewish people”. But let’s get into who Israel is and isn’t.
