A brief past/present/future of the triangle that is Monroe, Cadillac Square & Campus Martius in Detroit. 🧵
Between the days of the first fort and the layout we know today, there was Fort Shelby. It sat north of Savoyard Creek, the first creek to be buried & turned into an underground sewer. The angled fence follows today's Michigan Avenue.

"We hear your requests for more rail & buses but we think what you really mean is wider roads. Thank you for your comments." - MDOT
Drivers get airbags, seatbelts, crumple zones & are wrapped in steel. Our Department of Roads & Automobiles has failed to protect pedestrians. This was a young mother who died. Her name was Iris Liciaga. MDOT will not install bollards or put up arrow signs to make this road safer
This is exactly the kind of scenario that @schmangee talks about in Right of Way. MDOT will do nothing to make this intersection safer. Pedestrians are "Unsafe on any Street." This style of unprotected bike lane is also unsafe. It puts cyclists in conflict with the turn lane.
