Pete Reed, a conflict zone medic, was killed in a Russian bombing on a convoy evacuating civilians. He was an incredibly selfless, heroic person. What he did in Mosul in 2016 remains one of the most remarkable things I’ve ever seen. These are his hands after saving a child there
Mosul was chaos near the front when it kicked off. Too dangerous for medical NGO’s up front. So Pete went in further and set up a triage clinic in a dusty lot. Just stretchers and medical supplies. And he went to work saving lives.

NEW: I wrote about going to interview the man who hid/saved my grandfather from the nazis, a decade of war reporting, why some people risk their lives to save strangers while others kill their neighbors, and being the grandchild of 4 Holocaust survivors: tabletmag.com/sections/histo…
The nazis exterminated an entire generation of my family, all 7 great grandparents living. 2 grandparents were the sole surviving members of their families. When I started reporting on wars, I wanted to focus on ethnic/sectarian conflict to try to answer some questions I had.
