Funny story.

@ID_AA_Carmack talked about the Fandango VR app on his annual Connect talk.

He understands how cool 3D movies are in VR, and pushed to bring Fandango into Quest.

Facebook gave Fandango a special deal, allowing off-platform credit cards. No Oculus IAP required. Both Fandango & Bigscreen have 3D movie rentals. For every dollar, 60-80% goes to studios.

Unlike Fandango, Facebook is forcing us to pay them 30% IAP fee, or get kicked off the store.

We rent the exact same movies for the exact same price as Fandango!

Let's talk about how Facebook is screwing us in VR.

A major use case of @BigscreenVR is like the "iTunes of VR": we offer 3D movie rentals for $4.99. Digital Video distributors like @BigscreenVR give movie studios 60-80% of each transaction.

Oculus also has movie rental features, and similarly pays movie studios a % of each transaction.

However, Facebook is forcing Bigscreen to pay 30% for every movie rental sale we make.

I got incredibly lucky: with a rare morning with no fog in San Francisco, I was able to photograph Comet #NEOWISE from the Golden Gate Bridge

It peaks today at Magnitude +1 brightness and will be visible to the naked eye for the next week.

#cometc2020f3 #cometNEOWISE #abc7now ImageImageImageImage You don’t need a DSLR or telescope to see Comet #NEOWISE.

Although I used a DSLR, you can see it with the naked eye, and capture a photo with your iPhone (see below - a 3 second exposure!)

Go check it out this week! Low to the north-east horizon from 4-5AM before sunrise. ImageImage

On a personal note, I photographed the Andromeda Galaxy with my RASA 8" telescope instagram.com/p/B_iHC_JJw9s/

Prints available on @heyadam's new site "Prints for Relief" shutter.co

All proceeds donated to the Lee Initiative to help restaurant workers in need #COVIDー19 Image Over the past decade, I've tried (and failed) many times to capture galaxies and nebulae. Astrophotography is a highly technical and punishing hobby.

I finally succeeded last year.

Here's my shot of the Lagoon and Trifid nebulae. instagram.com/p/B_iGu7jJlCp/ Image

1/ Here's why Oculus Quest is the "iPhone of VR" and why it matters so much 2/ Today, VR headsets SUCK. They each have bad tradeoffs that lead to an unpleasant user experience. The future of VR are Standalone headsets:

1/ What people don't understand about Apple's advantage in creating a world-class AR headset (versus HoloLens or MagicLeap):

Apple is shipping the core pieces of an AR headset today to hundreds of millions of users 2/ Every iPhone now has a depth sensor.

Apple will ship nearly 100 million depth sensors in 2018/2019. They have successfully miniaturized (with a low cost BOM) the fundamental sensor for inside-out positional tracking of any headmounted VR/AR device

Just a couple years ago, achieving this fidelity of facial & body mocap would cost a studio millions of dollars

Today all you need are commodity body trackers and an iPhoneX (facial)

Amazing work @KNLstudio

Some awesome VR tech at @siggraph 2018 this week, including @KNLstudio's face/body mocap and Pinscreen's photorealistic avatars, both relying on the iPhone X

I'm skeptical of VR companies trying to build the metaverse.

We already have a metaverse: the Internet. It's made up of MANY apps/platforms A single company building and owning the whole metaverse? That sounds horrible and dystopian. Can we not?
