For our soldiers at the Battle of Danny Boy, wriggle room meant mustering the physical courage to crawl through fields under enemy fire.

For Lord Hermer and his clients, it meant an escape hatch for when their allegations collapsed.
1/9 Image Phil Shiner was struck off. Lord Hermer became Attorney General.

The Attorney will want to provide a full explanation.

It would, to use his spokesperson’s words, be unfair if he "didn't have the opportunity to show [his] innocence through a proper investigation."

If Mr Johnson remains an MP, he’s subject to “the same rules as everyone else” – a basic principle of the rule of law and good governance. For Conservatives, that should be self-evident. If the PM (and some others) had abided by that principle, he wouldn’t have had to resign.
/1 Those rules include investigations by the Privileges Committee, which is set up under the authority of the entire House of Commons.
There was a debate on 21 April, and the resolution to ask the Committee to investigate was carried - unanimously.

Barristers and social media – a short thread. And a brief response to @AdamWagner1 @JolyonMaugham @FaiselSadiq and @ShoaibMKhan (I've been offline until now because of Shabbat). /1 @AdamWagner1 @JolyonMaugham @FaiselSadiq @ShoaibMKhan It’s fundamental to the rule of law that advocates are not identified with their client.
If you act for an asylum seeker, you're not abetting people smugglers, and if you act for a convicted rapist you're not condoning rape.
I’ve made that point last week in @UKHouseofLords /2

There’s nothing so former as a former minister, so I won’t get into the working in the office / working from home issue.

But I do want to underline the high quality of the civil service we have in this country. /1 Whether in policy groups or my private office, the civil servants I worked with were dedicated, diligent and hard-working.

Of course some were more gifted than others (no doubt that applies to ministers, too), but the overall standard was impressive. /2

This evening we announce plans for a “No Repeal Act” - which will mean that once an Act of Parliament is given Royal Assent, it can’t ever be withdrawn, repealed or overturned.

This will promote legal certainty, and is based on an ancient principle of Persian law. 1/3 The consultation closes tomorrow evening (but on Friday if you live in Chester, York and possibly the City of London).
Once enacted in the UK, we will work with the UN to roll this out internationally, to some 127 countries. 2/3
