This is Yohannes*. He is 17 yrs old and this is his story about how he was failed by the local authority that was meant to care for him. We share it here with his permission, to show how many unaccompanied asylum-seeking children are failed due to the hostile environment. /thread
Yohannes arrived in the UK, age 15, in the back of a lorry, having survived a long and traumatic journey from Eritrea – passing through the Sahara Desert, through Libya and across the Mediterranean Sea. During his journey his life was regularly put at risk.
At least 11 unaccompanied teenage boys, from Eritrea, Ethiopia and Afghanistan, have taken their own lives after arriving in the UK. We have written to Nadine Dorries, Minister for suicide prevention, along with 46 other organisations, demanding an inquiry. #11TooMany
We are gravely concerned that these deaths are only the tip of an iceberg, because there is no transparency from the government about deaths by suicide in the asylum system or among children in care.
