This MLK Day, let's talk about colonization or in other words the "Back to Africa" movement of early 19th century America and how this movement was destroyed by Jewish and English abolitionists radically shifting how Christians viewed race, citizenship, and slavery.

🧵 1/17 Image As a movement colonization promoted the relocation of free Black Americans to Africa and culminated in the establishment of Liberia as a colony in 1822.

The American Colonization Society (ACS) was the primary organization behind the movement and was founded in 1816 by Robert Finley.

Notable members included:

Henry Clay, Speaker of the House and later Secretary of State.

James Monroe, President who supported the movement and for whom Monrovia, Liberia's capital, was named.

Bushrod Washington, Supreme Court Justice and nephew of George Washington
