It's the 5th round of the NHL Draft.

Detroit GM Jim Devellano has his eyes on a player he views as a future star.

For weeks, the Red Wings were told he was ineligible.

"Don't take him," the NHL said. "You'll waste a pick."

Now on the clock, Detroit calls the NHL... "Is the league certain Pavel Bure is not eligible for this draft?" Devellano asked.

NHL VP Gil Stein was annoyed.

"As the league memo stated and as we have advised, Pavel Bure is ineligible." Stein said.

By rule, the 18-year-old Soviet was too young to be taken after Round 3.
