Back in May 2023, KRG President Barzani also met with Khazali, and according to reports, "congratulated Khazali on the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Asaib Ahl al-Haq movement."

"Freedom of Religious Belief" is a narrow Western policy framework devised to understand and grade far-flung areas of the world that are far more complex than the framework can accurately process. All of the people touched by it deserve better.
What results is a blinkered view of minority communities and the politics around them. It becomes a reductive mechanism to produce knowledge with authority for policymakers who are too eager to find success stories in bleak scenarios.
