If you're ever in doubt that power determines not only the facts on the ground but the rewriting of history, you only have to see the results in rhetoric like this.

One of the only conceptual frameworks left for indigenous people to argue for their rights is co-opted and abused. Many Kurds played an active role in the genocide of indigenous peoples for over a century, whether by aiding the Ottomans and continuing their policies or enabling ISIS to wreak havoc. "Freedom of Religious Belief" is a narrow Western policy framework devised to understand and grade far-flung areas of the world that are far more complex than the framework can accurately process. All of the people touched by it deserve better. What results is a blinkered view of minority communities and the politics around them. It becomes a reductive mechanism to produce knowledge with authority for policymakers who are too eager to find success stories in bleak scenarios.
